MSHSML PRACTICE

2012-2013, QUALIFICATION EXAM, Meet 5, Individual Event B

Question #1 is intended to be a quickie and is worth 1 point. Each of the next three questions is worth 2 points.
Place your answer to each question on the line provided. You have 12 minutes for this event.
Note: Pictures are not drawn to scale.
1. You are given a cone of radius r and height h, with a volume of 27. If we reduce the radius 3 times
and increase the height 5 times, determine the new volume.

2. Given a right triangle ABC with AB = 9, AC = 15,

= 90
o

(

signifies the angle at A, for those who are not familiar with
this notation). From A, draw a perpendicular line to (BC), cut (BC)
at D. From D, draw a perpendicular line to (AB), cut (AB) at E.
Determine exactly the value of tan(

). See Figure 1.

3. Given a triangle ABC with AB = 35, AC = 84, BC = 91.
Take a point K inside the triangle such that the line L1 which
goes through K and is parallel to (BC) divides the triangle
into two pieces of equal area. Line L1 cuts (AB) at D and
(AC) at E. Determine exactly the value of DE. See Figure 2.

4. Give a square ABCD. Call E any point on BC. Line (DE)
cuts (AB) at F. From A, draw a perpendicular line to (DE),
cuts (DE) at H. Also from A, draw a line L1 that is parallel
to (DE). From B, draw a perpendicular line to L1, cuts L1 at
K. From E, draw a perpendicular line to (CF), cut (CF) at T.
Given that AH = x, BK = y, determine exactly the value of
ET in terms of x and y. See Figure 3. (Line L1 is not drawn,
only segment AK is shown).
