SPECIFIC OBJECTIVES TO MEET GOALS: The student will be able to identify and name constellations in our atmosphere as well as other important parts of our solar system.
COMMON CORE STANDARD: The students will cover core idea ESS1 which answers the question what is the universe, and what is Earths place in it. More specifically, the lesson focuses on ESS1A, what is the universe, and what goes on in stars?
MOTIVATIONAL TECHNIQUES: I will start off by showing my students a picture of the night sky. I will then talk about stargazing, a pastime that almost all enjoy. I will then go into the science and history of the stars in our universe. I will use a screen and projector to show off the constellations to my students to gain their interest.
MATERIALS NEEDED: I will need my computer, a smartboard or projector, and to find pictures of constellations. I will also need to research information on the constellations. My students will need to bring their books to class.
PROCEDURE FOR THE LESSON: Students will remain on their own for this lesson. 1. Opening statement/ Stargazing/ introduce homework (5 minutes) 2. Book reading/ Terms from the book (15 minutes) 3. Stargazing and learning constellations using a computer and smartboard or projector for viewing (25 minutes) 4. Homework question (last 5 minutes)
ACADEMIC LANGUAGE: Students will learn terms such as nuclear fusion, supernova, and the matter that makes up the stars in our galaxy.
ASSESSMENT METHODS: The students will each be given a constellation to research and write a one page summary on and return to the class.
Sarah Hicks CSC 155 Lesson Plan Reflection
This assignment was a lesson plan showing how I could incorporate technology into the classroom. The goal of this would be ideally to use it when I am a teacher in the classroom. This lesson plan could also be used in student teaching. This assignment shows how easy it is to incorporate technology into little parts of lessons. Technology can make the lessons more interactive and easier for students. This lesson plan is a science lesson because I am studying to be a middle or high school biology teacher. It incorporates and teaches students about the universe around us and especially stars and constellations.
Overall, I think this assignment went pretty well. I have not actually been taught how to write a lesson plan, so this is my first actual try. Im sure there are mistakes and many things I will be able to change. As I learn more, I will get better at creating lesson plans. Also, there are no common core standards for science yet so I just used standards off of the internet. There may be better or more universal standards that I could use for my next lesson plan. I like the idea of incorporating technology into lesson plans. Doing this well can make the lesson more interactive for the students learning the material.
