Running from Crazy is a 2013 documentary directed by Barbara Kopple.

It
follows a model and actor Mariel Hemingway, granddaughter of Ernest
Hemingway, in her journey to understand the past of her family. The Hemingways
are famous for literature but they have dark secrets, for example, their family has a
history of substance abuse and suicide (there have been at least seven suicides).
The reason Mariel Hemingway wanted to understand her familys dark history is
so that she can stop her and her daughters from having a similar fate. Mariel
Hemingway, is also experiencing some of these problems, she is struggling with
depression and thoughts of suicide, which is why she wants to find out more about
her family, to help herself. Another reason why she decided to create her journey
into a documentary was that she did not want the world to view her family as a
family of tragedy; she wanted the world to think of her family as people who have
overcome great hardships. It also includes footage and appearances of her siblings
Margaux Hemingway, and Joan (Muffet) Hemingway. Although Margaux passed
away due to a drug overdose, the film used footage shot by Margaux Hemingway
in 1982. For many years, Mariel explains how she has tried to hide from the truth
and keep it buried in the past; she also attempted to keep it from her daughters. As
a family, she wouldnt talk to them about what would go on in their family in past
years because she did not want her daughters to feel/be affected by it. In the end,
Mariel is able to find a new path, and ways to help her such as yoga, meditation,
and exercise. Finally, she becomes dedicated to helping others in similar problems
and spreading suicide awareness and in suicide prevention.
