After screening our documentary to an audience, we asked for feedback in regards to
different elements of a film and the response we received was healthy amount of both positive praise, and constructive criticism.
Positive Comments
Cinematography- One of the most common positive mentions we received was in reference to the cinematography of the documentary and the different use of shot types we adopted. One scene in particular that received a lot of praise was the interview scene. The shallow depth of field, excellent lighting and the great mise-en- scene established by the classroom lead to the scene looking great; which is the feedback we received from the audience.
Host and Participant Another element that the audience loved was how approachable and friendly the host and participant seemed to be. Both the two characters came across to the audience well, which gave way to effective story telling because the audience felt that the onscreen cast were relatable and accessible. Editing- The audience enjoyed the editing suggesting that it was smooth and felt realistic. A further mention was given again to the interview scene because the editing allowed for effective and logical conversation between the host and the participant.
Negative Comments
Audio- One of the most commented upon elements of the documentary was the audio. The biggest issues the audience pointed out were the same areas that I recognised that the audio was not up to the standard we were hoping. These issues occurred due to such factors as a plane flying over, and the use of the gym equipment caused a loud enough noise for the audience to struggle to hear the narration of the host.
Handheld- A few members of the audience made a comment about the use of handheld cameras to shot the establishing shots and the narrators first pitch to camera. Some members of the audience felt that many of the handheld shots were too distracting and disruptive and took away from the effectiveness of how the overall narrative was communicated to the audience.
