Lest We Forget- World War II Exhibition

The George Cross Island Association (GCIA) Malta Branch will be hosting a World War II exhibition in
collaboration with the Malta Libraries. Lest We Forget will be held at the National Library in
Valletta from 26 March to 19 April 2014.
The exhibition will feature the civilian and military aspects of life in Malta during the Siege. Explore
every day life in Malta from 1940-1943; from the victory kitchens that used to line our streets to the
disastrous effects of the innumerable air raids on the island. Among the intriguing artefacts, the
exhibition also houses a babys gas mask and a German propaganda catalogue containing pictures of
bombed areas in Malta. Yet, despite these setbacks, the steadfastness of Maltese and Allied soldiers
is evident in the medals awarded for bravery and valour which feature in the exhibition. A currency
and Allied poster propaganda collection of the era also form part of the display.
The military section of the exhibition gives an insight of life in the armed and naval forces. The
display houses military and technical gear ranging from Allied and Axis helmets and badges to radios
and telephones. Delve into Operation Pedestal, follow the treacherous voyage of the Ohio convoy
and read newspapers of the era to feel the hope that this convoy restored in our country.
Finally, the exhibition also acts as a constant reminder of Maltas valour during the war, when King
George VI awarded the George Cross: "To honour her brave people. Invaluable artefacts including
the George Cross and the Roosevelt Citation will thus feature in this section.
