1500s just Portugal and Spain
By mid 1600s England, France, and the
Netherlands
By 1700s England dominated slave trade

Europe did not have the need for slaves, but
the colonies in the Americas did
Sugarcane and tobacco are labor intensive
crops
Native Americas were used at first but
They escaped and hid bc they knew the land so well
Died from European diseases
Africans were used to this type of labor and had
better immunities to the diseases.

Work wasnt as brutal as in the Caribbean and
Brazil
Slaves naturally increase their population
Many African societys were very powerful.
Some did not allow Europeans passed the
coast.
The leaders in Africa traded with the
Europeans.
They would capture people from neighboring
villages and towns
Neighbors had to either participate or be
taken as slaves
Native population reduced
Chattel slavery
Permanent slaves
In earlier societies slaves would eventually be
set free or at least their children and/or
grandchildren would not be slaves
African leaders would
trade slaves for
manufactured goods
from Europe.
Slaves would be
taken to the New
World and traded for
