Prevention program for type 2
diabetes
Aims of the program
Prevent people from developing type
2 diabetes. Specifically, it aims to
prevent the onset of diabetes in
25,000 high risk people over a four
year period.
Contribute to early diagnosis in those
who have type 2 diabetes but dont
know they do.
Targeted groups
Victorians aged over 50
Aboriginal and Torres Straight
Islanders of all agers
Potential Health Benefits
Early detection of type 2 diabetes-
reduce severity of the condition
Prevention and therefore reduction
in incidence of type 2 diabetes
Reduce burden of disease as a result
of early detection and prevention.
Reduced complications due to type 2
diabetes e.g kidney damage,
amputation, blindness, heart attack
Strategies
The program includes:
a mass media campaign
The development and promotion of a
diabetes risk test to identify Victorians
a risk of developing type 2 diabetes
Delivery of a lifestyle behaviour change
course (Life! Course) to 25,000
Victorians who are at high risk of
developing diabetes.
Strategies
The development and promotion of a
diabetes risk test to identify Victorians a
risk of developing type 2 diabetes:
Tests can be accessed over the phone
or on the website.
Provides feedback to the general public
who feel they may be at an increased
risk of developing type 2 diabetes.
Those considered at risk can then
consult a GP get a referral for the Life!
Course.

Strategies
Delivery of a lifestyle behaviour change
course to 25,000 Victorians who are at
high risk of developing diabetes:
Involves six group sessions over an
eight month period that educates
individuals about type 2 diabetes and
the lifestyle and behavioural changes
required to reduce their risk (e.g eating
habits, physical activity)
