Lesson 1 [Body Numbers]

Rationale:
To teach students about their body and maths.
The teaching approach is student-centred group work.
Context Suburban/rural setting/ suitable for students year level 1 and up 20-25 students, 4-5 groups.
Learning area(s): Mathematics and motor skills
Lesson format: Integrated
Time: 60 minutes

Learning objectives
To consolidate learning on simple number sentences
Review addition and subtraction
Teamwork
Aim to link LO to Australian Curriculum (AC).
Prior knowledge
All students will know how to count and draw numerals and have
preliminary number sentence skills to draw on

The learning
environment

Clear the floor area chairs and tables back around the walls
Clear the board
Organise students into groups of four with range of abilities in each for
fairness
Name the groups

Resources
Whiteboard markers and pens
Large cleared floor space preferably carpeted
Students maths books and pencils

Introduction &
Motivation

10 minutes
The teacher will explain the task to the students and have some give an
example.
The group that has the fastest times with the most correct answers gets
chance at the student lucky dip

Body of the lesson
40 minutes
The teacher will mediate the groups, judging the answers and keep score on
the board.
The children will be required to form the numerals of the answer to simple
number sentences lying on the ground, using their bodies.
Each group will have 10 minutes of questions

Concluding the lesson
15 minutes
Put the classroom back together and copy the maths into workbooks as
homework

Evaluation/Follow up
Did every child participate and feel necessary?
Was most of the revision answered correctly check homework and follow
up on those students struggling to answer the same question from home
