Alberta Health Services has offered to pay severance to Allaudin Merali, who was terminated after it was revealed he billed taxpayers for exorbitant expenses, but the former executive rejected the offer as he proceeds with a multimillion dollar defamation suit against the province and its health authority.
Merali was hired as the health authority’s chief financial officer in May 2012, but held the job only three months. He was terminated Aug. 1, around the same time a freedom of information request was released showing that filed more than $350,000 worth of expense claims as an executive with the former Capital Health Authority from 2005-08. The expenses included bills for lavish meals, butler services and upgrades to his Mercedes.
