Philosophy Statement

By David Carwell
(First Draft)
There are two types of mathematics: theoretical mathematics
and practical mathematics. Theoretical mathematics will
provide students with a knowledge needed to continuing deeper
into the realm of mathematics. Practical mathematics will
provide students with the basic knowledge needed to deal with
events in everyday life. Perhaps I will have the opportunity to
assist students in determining the best path for them.
I plan to approach courses in theoretical mathematics in a
professional manner, using correct terms and traditional
methods.
I plan to approach practical mathematics in a completely
different way, to make math fun for the learner.
I will demonstrate concepts in class and encourage students to
collaborate when working in-class to apply those concepts. I
will allow my students to collaborate on homework but expect
them to ultimately do their own work instead of copying from
each other.
Homework, quizzes and tests will be graded on the traditional
scale of 90-100 is an A, 80-89 is a B and so forth. Test
corrections and extra-credit work will be allow students some
flexibility in making up lost points.
