1. !onditions for #dmissions

Candidates for admission to the $.*ech. de&ree course shall be re0uired to have #assed the 3i&her Secondary
%4amination of State $oard of Kerala or 12th Standard 5.3.S.%., C.$.S.%., I.C.S.%. or e4aminations
reco&ni6ed e0uivalent by any 'niversities of Kerala thereto ,ith mathematics, #hysics and chemistry as
o#tional sub7ects, ,ith /.8 mar1s in !athematics and /.8 mar1s in "hysics, Chemistry, and !athematics
#ut to&ether. Candidates belon&in& to scheduled caste and scheduled tribe need only a #ass in the 0ualifyin&
e4amination.
Candidates have to 0ualify the State 9evel %ntrance e4amination conducted by the Commissioner of
%ntrance %4aminations or State level:;ational level %ntrance %4amination a##roved by the (overnment of
Kerala as e0uivalent. *hey shall also satisfy the conditions re&ardin& a&e and #hysical fitness as #rescribed
by the !ahatma (andhi 'niversity
Criteria for selection and method of admission to merit:mana&ement seats for %n&ineerin& de&ree
courses conducted by (overnment:Aided:Self<financin& colle&es affiliated to !ahatma (andhi 'niversity
shall be &overned by the rules:re&ulations framed by the Commissioner of %ntrance %4aminations or other
com#etent authority a##ointed by the (overnment of Kerala, in consultation ,ith the 'niversity and ,ithout
contravenin& ,ith the sti#ulation of the All India Council for *echnical %ducation (AIC*%). In all matters
related to selection and admission, the decisions of the 'niversity shall be final. *he students admitted by
affiliated colle&es violatin& the above re&ulations ,ill not be eli&ible for re&istration to 'niversity
%4aminations and contravention of the re&ulations shall lead to ,ithdra,al:sus#ension of affiliation.

2. #dmission to $i%loma &olders

A candidate ,ho has a di#loma in en&ineerin& a,arded by the State $oard of *echnical %4amination or
an e4amination reco&ni6ed e0uivalent by the State $oard of *echnical %ducation after under&oin& re&ular
course of - years in an institute a##roved by AIC*%, securin& a cumulative minimum of /.8 mar1s in the
second and third years di#loma e4amination shall be eli&ible to be admitted to the first year $.*ech.
#ro&ramme of the !ahatma (andhi 'niversity (hereafter, the 'niversity, unless other,ise s#ecified) if
he:she has 0ualified the entrance e4amination conducted by the Commissioner of %ntrance %4aminations or
State level:;ational level %ntrance %4amination a##roved by the (overnment of Kerala as e0uivalent.
=i#loma holders ,ith >.8 mar1s (/.8 in case of SC:S*) are also eli&ible for admission to the -

semester (re&ular full<time batch) en&ineerin& de&ree course ($.*ech.) under the lateral entry scheme
#rovided they 0ualify the %ntrance %4amination conducted for the lateral entry scheme by the state
(overnment. *hese students are not re0uired to study any deficiency #a#ers of the combined first and second
semesters. Admission of all candidates under the lateral entry scheme shall be com#leted latest by
commencement of -

*he sub7ects of study, both theory and #ractical, shall be in accordance ,ith the #rescribed scheme
and syllabi of each branch of study.

.. $uration of the !ourse

*he course for the $.*ech de&ree shall e4tend over a #eriod of four academic years com#risin& of
ei&ht semesters. *he first and second semesters shall be combined? the scheme and syllabi for combined first
and second semesters (S

) ,ill be common for all branches of study. *he ma4imum duration #ermissible
for ta1in& the $.*ech. =e&ree is fi4ed as @ years. or lateral entry students ma4imum duration #ermissible
for ta1in& the $.*ech. =e&ree is fi4ed as A years.

0. !ourse !alendar

*he course calendar, #ublished by the 'niversity, shall be follo,ed by all affiliated en&ineerin&
colle&es. Eithin a ,ee1 after the commencement of classes of each semester, 3ead of each Institution should
for,ard the list of faculty members ,or1in& in the colle&e alon& ,ith their 0ualification and years of
teachin& e4#erience, to the 'niversity. *his is a mandatory re0uirement ,hich should be strictly follo,ed by
3ead of each Institution. 3ead of each Institution shall ensure the availability of sufficient number of re&ular
faculty members havin& e4#erience and 0ualifications (as #er AIC*% &uidelines) in the institution.

1. #ssessment of Students

Assessment of students for each sub7ect ,ill be done by internal continuous assessment and Semester<
%nd e4aminations. Internal assessment shall be conducted throu&hout the semester. It shall be based on
internal e4aminations, assi&nments (such as home assi&nment, #roblem solvin&, &rou# discussions, 0ui6,
literature survey, seminar, term<#ro7ect, soft,are e4ercises, etc.) as decided by the faculty handlin& the
course, and re&ularity in the class. Assi&nments of every semester shall #referably be submitted in
Assi&nment $oo1, ,hich is a bound boo1 similar to laboratory record.
Semester<%nd e4aminations of theory and #ractical sub7ects ,ill be conducted by the 'niversity.
Semester<%nd e4aminations of combined first and second semesters and -

conducted only once in a year? failed or im#rovement candidates ,ill have to a##ear for the Semester<%nd

be conducted once in every semester. 3ead of institution should ta1e necessary ste#s to #revent any
mal#ractices in the Semester<%nd e4aminations. If any such instances are detected, they should be re#orted to
the 'niversity ,ithout any delay.
Internal assessment mar1s of each theory sub7ect should have a class avera&e limited to @.8. If the
class avera&e of internal assessment mar1s of any theory sub7ects is &reater than @.8, standard normali6ation
#rocedure should be a##lied to limit it to @.8. If the class avera&e is not &reater than @.8, absolute mar1s
should be &iven.
or #ractical sub7ects, internal assessment mar1s and Semester<%nd e4amination mar1s individually
should have a class avera&e limited to A/8. If the class avera&e of internal assessment mar1s or Semester<
%nd e4amination mar1s of #ractical sub7ects is &reater than A/8, the standard normali6ation #rocedure
should be a##lied to limit the class avera&e to A/8. If it is not &reater than A/8, absolute mar1s should be
&iven.
All the students in the nominal roll of the class on the closin& day of semester should be considered for
normali6ation of internal mar1s. All the students ,ho have #assed the Semester<%nd #ractical e4amination
should be considered for normalisation of mar1s of Semester<%nd #ractical e4aminations.
Internal assessment mar1s of theory and #ractical sub7ects, both absolute and normalised, should be
#ublished in the colle&e 1. days before sendin& it to the 'niversity so as to enable the students to re#ort any
corrections.

(a" #ssessment in Theory Sub'ects

*he mar1s allotted for internal continuous assessment and Semester<%nd university e4aminations shall be

Internal continuous assessment and Semester<%nd #ractical e4aminations ,ill have ,ei&hta&e in the

An e4ternal e4aminer and an internal e4aminer, a##ointed by the 'niversity, shall conduct the Semester<
%nd e4aminations of #ractical sub7ects. *hese e4aminers should necessarily have minimum t,o years
teachin& e4#erience at en&ineerin& de&ree level.
A,ard of mar1s in the Semester<%nd #ractical e4aminations (e4ce#t "ro7ect) should be as follo,s+

;o candidate ,ill be #ermitted to attend the Semester<%nd #ractical e4aminations unless he:she
#roduces certified record of the laboratory.
Strict measures ,ill be ta1en by the 'niversity to monitor the laboratory facilities, laboratory
e4#eriments conducted, standard of Semester<%nd #ractical e4aminations, etc. in every affiliated en&ineerin&
colle&e. In this re&ard, an e4#ert team com#risin& of at least three sub7ect e4#erts from
&overnment:&overnment<aided en&ineerin& colle&es from ,ithin:outside the 'niversity shall be formulated
to assess these as#ects in affiliated en&ineerin& colle&es. *his e4#ert team should visit each en&ineerin&
colle&e at least once in a semester and submit a detailed re#ort to the 'niversity re&ardin& the laboratory
facilities, laboratory e4#eriments conducted, and standard of Semester<%nd #ractical e4aminations in each
colle&e.

2. )attern of *uestions for Semester-+nd +,aminations of Theory Sub'ects

*he 0uestion #a#ers of Semester<%nd e4aminations of theory sub7ects shall be able to #erform
achievement testin& of the students in an effective manner. *he 0uestion #a#er shall be #re#ared

(a) coverin& all sections of the course syllabus
(b) unambi&uous and free from any defects:errors
(c) em#hasi6in& 1no,led&e testin&, #roblem solvin& & 0uantitative methods
(d) containin& ade0uate data:other information on the #roblems assi&ned
(e) havin& clear and com#lete instructions to the candidates.

Eei&hta&e for cate&ories such as #roblem solvin&, descri#tive, dra,in&, or dia&rammatic 0uestions shall be
s#ecified alon& ,ith the syllabus of any sub7ect, if necessary. !odel 0uestion #a#er shall be #re#ared for
each sub7ect at the time of framin& the syllabus. *his same model 0uestion #a#er alon& ,ith the syllabus
must be sent to the 0uestion<#a#er setter every time for framin& the 0uestions. *he model 0uestion #a#er
shall be made available to students.
It is #ermitted to have an entirely different #attern of 0uestions es#ecially for sub7ects involvin&
dra,in&, desi&n, etc. 3o,ever, the modified #attern to be follo,ed shall be clearly s#ecified alon& ,ith the
syllabus of the #articular sub7ect. All 0uestion #a#er setters should su##lement the scheme and 1ey for the
evaluation

3. 6inimum for )ass

A candidate shall be declared to have #assed in an individual sub7ect of a semester e4amination if he:she
secures not less than C.8 mar1s for the sub7ect in the university e4amination and not less than /.8 of the
total mar1s of the sub7ect i.e. university examination marks and sessional marks in that subject put togather.
A candidate shall be declared to have #assed in a semester e4amination in full in first a##earance (first
re&istration is considered as first a##earance) if he satisfies the above criteria for each theory and #ractical
sub7ects

ei&hth semester) e4ce#t 5iva<5oce in the ei&hth semester, a re<e4amination for the 5iva<5oce should be
conducted ,ithin one month after the #ublication of results. %ach candidate should a##ly for this HSave a
Semester e4aminationG ,ithin one ,ee1 after the #ublication of ei&hth semester results.

10. !redit System

%ach sub7ect shall have a certain number of credits assi&ned to it de#endin& u#on the academic load and
the nature and im#ortance of the sub7ect. *he credit associated ,ith each sub7ect ,ill be sho,n in the
#rescribed scheme and syllabi. %ach course shall have an inte&er number of credits, ,hich reflects its
,ei&hta&e.

11. 7radin4

*he university shall a,ard the letter &rade to students based on the mar1s secured by them in both
internal assessment and Semester<%nd e4aminations ta1en to&ether in the sub7ects re&istered. %ach letter
&rade indicates a 0ualitative assessment of the studentGs #erformance and is associated ,ith a s#ecified
number of &rade #oints. *he &radin& system alon& ,ith the &rade #oints for each &rade, a##licable to #assed
candidates is sho,n belo,. All #assed candidate ,ill be allotted a &rade S, A, $, C, =, or % accordin& to the
total mar1s scored by him:her.
If a candidate does not a #ass a sub7ect as #er the conditions &iven in Section (B), he:she ,ill be
assi&ned an 'nsatisfactory &rade H'G irres#ective of his:her total mar1s. If a student does not #ass a sub7ect
in t,o attem#ts, the ma4imum &rade he:she can &et is HCG ,hen he:she #asses the sub7ect in any subse0uent
e4amination, ,hatever be the mar1s scored by him:her.
A student is considered to have com#leted a sub7ect successfully and earned the credits if he:she
secures a letter &rade other than H'G in that course. 9etter &rade H'G has 6ero &rade #oint and the candidate
has to ,rite the e4amination a&ain to im#rove the &rade. A studentIs #erformance is measured by the number
of credits that he:she has earned and by the cumulative &rade #oint avera&e (C("A) maintained by him:her..

An u#<to<date assessment of overall #erformance of a student is obtained by calculatin& C("A.
C("A is ,ei&hted avera&e of the &rade #oints obtained in all the sub7ects re&istered by the students
since he entered the $.*ech. course.

(c) $oth the S("A and C("A shall be rounded off to the second #lace of decimal and recorded
as such for ease of #resentation. Ehenever the C("As are to be used for the #ur#ose of determinin&
the merit ran1in& in a &rou# of students, only the rounded off values shall be made use of.

1-. Im%rovement

Candidates shall be allo,ed to im#rove the &rade of any t,o theory sub7ects in a semester. *his can be
done only in the immediate subse0uent chance. If the candidate &ets more mar1s in the im#rovement chance,
mar1s scored in the im#rovement chance ,ill be considered for &radin& in the sub7ect? other,ise mar1s
scored in the first attem#t ,ill be retained. ;o candidate shall be #ermitted to im#rove the mar1s scored in
#ractical e4aminations and internal continuous assessment.

1.. #ttendance

A candidate shall be #ermitted to a##ear for the Semester<%nd e4aminations only if he:she satisfies
the follo,in& re0uirements+
(a) 3e:she must secure not less than A/8 attendance in the total number of ,or1in& #eriods
durin& the first year and in each semester thereafter? and shall be #hysically #resent for a minimum
of >/8 of the total ,or1in& #eriods. In addition, he:she also shall be #hysically #resent in at least
2.8 of total attendance for each sub7ect.
(b) 3e:she must earn a #ro&ress certificate from the head of the institution statin& that he:she
has satisfactorily com#leted the course of study #rescribed in the semester as re0uired by these
re&ulations.
(c) 3is:her conduct must be satisfactory

It shall be o#en to the 5ice Chancellor to &rant condonation of shorta&e of attendance on the
recommendation of the head of the institution in accordance ,ith the follo,in& norms.
*he shorta&e shall not be more than 1.8
Shorta&e shall not be condoned more than t,ice durin& the entire course.
Candidate ,ho is not eli&ible for condonation of shorta&e of attendance shall
re#eat the semester.

1/. +li4ibility for )romotion to &i4her Semester 8 )rocedure for com%letin4 the
course
(a) A student ,ho has secured A/8 of attendance and has e4hibited satisfactory #ro&ress in the class ,ill
be eli&ible for #romotion to the ne4t hi&her semester.
(b) 3o,ever, before bein& admitted to the 5III semester classes, the student should have #assed in all
sub7ects in the combined first and second semester e4amination in full.
9ote- As this is an academic #rere0uisite, no e4em#tion should be &ranted in this case, ,hatever be the
causes.
A candidate shall com#lete the #ro&ramme and #ass all e4aminations ,ithin %i&ht (@) years since his first
admission to the $.*ech #ro&ramme.

10. Re4istration for end Semester e,amination
%very candidate should re&ister for all sub7ects of the Semester<%nd e4aminations of each semester. A
candidate ,ho does not re&ister ,ill not be #ermitted to attend the Semester<%nd e4aminations? he:she shall
not be #ermitted to attend the ne4t semester.
A candidate shall be eli&ible to re&ister for any hi&her semester (i.e. -

semester on,ards) if he:she
has satisfactorily com#leted the course of study and re&istered for the e4amination of the immediate #revious
semester. 3e:she should re&ister for the semester at the start of the semester before the sti#ulated date.
'niversity ,ill notify the startin& and closin& dates for each semester.

11. #dditional Re/uirements for the de4ree

In addition to the re0uirement #rescribed for the a,ard of $.*ech. de&ree, each student must com#lete
com#ulsory social service for a total duration of 1/ days durin& -

Students are e4#ected to underta1e industrial trainin&(s) of total 1. days minimum duration or industrial
visits (to minimum 2 industries) for studyin& about the industries of im#ortance to the branch concerned

semester. Students may also underta1e an educational tour, the tour #eriod shall be
considered as #art of the ,or1in& #eriods of a semester. *he tour maybe conducted durin& the

aculty members shall accom#any the students for the industrial visits:educational tour. %ach student shall
submit detailed bound re#ort(s) of the trainin&:visit:tour to the 3ead of =e#artment ,ithin t,o ,ee1s after
the #ro&ramme. *hese bound re#ort(s), si&ned by the staff advisor or faculty in char&e of tour:trainin&:visit
and by the head of de#artment, shall also be brou&ht durin& the final 5iva<5oce.
12. +,amination 6onitorin4 !ell

3ead of the each institution should formulate an %4amination !onitorin& Cell at the institution for
su#ervisin& all e4aminations, es#ecially the internal e4aminations. *his cell, ,ith a senior staff member as
Convener, shall consist of minimum three members (one shall be a lady).
*he collective res#onsibilities of the e4amination monitorin& cell are
(a) officiate as the e4amination s0uad to 1ee# a vi&il on all Semester<%nd e4aminations.
If any mal#ractices are found:re#orted by invi&ilators, inform these to the 3ead of Institution alon&
,ith a re#ort about the incident. 3ead of Institution shall for,ard all such com#laints to the 'niversity.
(b) schedule all e4aminations conducted as #art of internal assessment of students.
(c) to receive any com#laint from students re&ardin& issues li1e out<of<syllabus 0uestions, #rintin&
mista1es, etc. of Semester<%nd e4aminations of theory and #ractical sub7ects. *he cell shall investi&ate
these com#laints and if necessary for,ard it to university ,ith s#ecific comments.
(d) to receive any com#laints from students re&ardin& internal e4aminations, en0uire such incidents,
and &ive a re#ort to the 3ead of Institution for necessary action.
*o conduct all the theory e4aminations, a Chief Su#erintendent and a Senior Assistant Su#erintendent
should be a##ointed internally by the 3ead of Institution. At least one e4ternal Additional Chief
Su#erintendent from &overnment:&overnment<aided en&ineerin& colle&es ,ithin the 'niversity should be
a##ointed by the 'niversity for conductin& theory e4aminations in all affiliated self financin& %n&ineerin&
Colle&es.

13. +lectives

All students shall choose four elective sub7ects, one in the si4th, one in the seventh and t,o in ei&hth
semesters from a set of elective sub7ects #rescribed in the syllabus and offered by the institution. *here

3ead of institution shall ta1e necessary ste#s to form a class committee for each class at the start of
classes of each semester. *his class committee shall be in e4istence for the semester concerned. *he class
committee shall consist of the 3ead of =e#artment, Staff Advisor of the class, a senior faculty member of the
de#artment, a faculty member from another de#artment, and t,o student re#resentatives (one of them should
be a &irl in a mi4ed class). *here should be at least t,o meetin&s of the class committee every semester? it
shall be the res#onsibility of the 3ead of =e#artment to convene these meetin&s. *he decisions of the Class
Committee shall be recorded in a re&ister for further reference. %ach class committee ,ill communicate its
recommendations to the 3ead of Institution.

(a) to revie, #eriodically the #ro&ress and conduct of students in the class.
(b) to discuss any #roblems concernin& any sub7ects in the semester concerned.
