Community College Campus Visit
%
The community college I have chosen to visit is Delaware Technical Community College.
The College was founded in 1966 when the General assembly approved house bill !9 and"
signed it into law by the previous Governor Charles #. Terry $r. The Colleges mission statement
states %Delaware Technical College is a statewide multi&campus community college committed
to providing open admission" post&secondary education at the associate's degree level%. The first
campus opened its doors in (usse) County in (eptember 196*. (ince the college has opened +*
years ago they have established + campuses throughout the community, Dover" Georgetown"
-ilmington and (taunton. The schools founding purpose has been to provide training and
education to students of all ages" bac.grounds and various cultural differences. To date" Deltech
community college has provided academic support and training to about 1/+ of the population
within the state of Delaware.
I visited the (tanton campus located at +00 (tanton&Christiana 1oad" 2ewar. D3 19*14.
The Campus appeared to be newly built and offered a variety of programs such as, Culinary 5rts"
3ducation" 3ngineering Technologies" 6ealth and (cience" 7ublic (ervices" Transportation"
Developmental 3ducation and General 3ducation 8ust to name a few of the programs offering for
this campus. Delaware Tech currently offers over 100 associate degree programs. I found the
(tanton campus very easy to locate it is right of the interstate 9 2orth and is assessable to 2ew
9or." and -ashington DC and 7hiladelphia international airport.
5 prospective student can apply online at the schools website or at one of the campuses
itself. Deltech offers a new student orientation which involves a tour of each one of the +
campuses. The college offers various financial aid options (uch as, grants" scholarships" :ederal
-or.&(tudy and loans. Deltech also offers a (33D program which is a (tudent 3)cellence
3;uals Degree program for high school students who can ta.e college course while still in high
!
school before attending college. Deltech<s credits can be counted towards a degree once a
student completes high school. Deltech also offers transfer credit options for students who are
interested in continuing their education and attending a four year college. Deltech<s credits are
easily transferable and can be transferred to 8ust about any in&state or out of state colleges.
6owever" I did find one online posting on the google website that was posted ! years ago
by a former student who stated %The (tanton Christiana campus location was completely
disorgani=ed because they said they signed up for 6 non&credit pm courses and" all but" one
course was cancelled or rescheduled with only a 1 day notice of cancellation. The student also
stated the school does not update right away online and they had to wait 9 days for a refund for
their cancelled courses fees.
The student population at Deltech is very diverse at all four campuses as a prospective
student you feel very welcomed no matter what your age or bac.ground is if you attend. 5
prospective student may choose an 5ssociate's degree" certificate programs" and diplomas that
offer success towards employment and transferability to other institutions of higher learning. I
found Deltech<s tuition and fees to be very reasonable for both in&state and out of state. :or
e)ample" an in&state student will pay >1"?+.00 for 1! credits and an out of state student will pay
>4"960.00 for 1! credit hours for academic year !01+&!01. (tudent registration" services and
applications fees were all under >!0.00.
In addition" Deltech offers both traditional classroom instruction and distance learning
options for some courses which are referred to as learning communities.
*
Deltech currently has partnerships with the The Delaware 5ir 2ational Guard and offers an on&
site course at the 2ew Castle 52G @ase. This partnership has increased opportunities for
helping Guardsman pursue a Community College of the 5ir force 5ssociate in 5pplied (cience
Degree. The 5ir :orce is the only military branch that offers an 5ssociate's degree to its
members.
Ay overall impression of Delaware Technical Community College from my visit on
(eptember !0" !01+ was a very positive e)perience. I really li.ed to (tanton Campus building
because it was modern and assessable to the general public in the surrounding communities. The
college itself reminded me of the previous community college I attended and graduated from in
#owell Aassachusetts. There campuses are very diverse and centrali=ed throughout the
community ma.ing student services fle)ible and accessible+
