Project Options

The River

The Assignment: There are three project options available for our assignment on
The River. Choose one option below to demonstrate your understanding and
interpretation of the novel, The River.

Due Date: Monday, November 3

Point Value: 100 Points

Grading: In grading your project, I will consider the following:
Does your project meet the requirements as outlined in the description?
Is it neat and as visually attractive as possible?
Are the written portions clear? Do they demonstrate correct grammar and
mechanics (spelling, capitalization, & punctuation)?
Does the project show correct understanding and reasonable interpretation
of the novel?

OPTION 1: Letter
Choose a character such as Brian or Derek. Write a letter from your character to
a friend or relative.

Describe the situation in the Canadian wilderness and the state of complete FEAR.
Draw on details from the novel as you describe your view of recent events and
reactions to them. The letter must show your understanding of the important
events in the book and of the characters feelings and emotions.

(1) Please follow the correct format for a friendly letter.
(2) Use details from the story to support the situation in the Canadian wilderness
in The River.
(3) The letter should include at least three paragraphs consisting of 6-8
sentences each.
(4) Letters may be typed using a cursive format with a font size of 12 or 14.

OPTION 2: Illustrated Plot Outline of the book.

Identify ten or twelve of the most significant events of the book. Arrange these
events chronologically on a plot diagram to show the setting (exposition), rising
action (with conflicts), climax (with conflict), falling action, and resolution.
Illustrate each point on the diagram with a small drawing and accompany each
drawing with a short caption: 3-5 sentences in length. Captions should be typed or
hand-written neatly. After looking at your plot outline, a viewer should have a basic
understanding of the novel.

(1) Please use a poster board to display event/captions on your plot
diagram.

(2) All illustrations may be colored or black and white. Illustrations should
be no larger than 2-3 inches so that they may fit neatly on one poster
board. Captions should be placed under each illustration.


















OPTION 3: Prezi Presentation

Using Prezi ( Prezi is a cloud-based presentation software and storytelling tool for
presenting ideas on a virtual canvas), create a presentation about The River.
Include the setting, main idea, problem, characters, plot, theme, and problem
resolution etc. in your project presentation.
