Objective:
Over the next few days, you and your co-Mayors will be constructing a city in the Kingdom. This city will be
comprised of three-dimensional objects made from two-dimensional objects, nets. Your objective is to figure
out the total amount of money spent on heating and cooling your buildings.
Requirements:
Your city must have at least one of the following:
o Pyramid
o Cylinder
o Cone
o Prism
Before putting your building into your final model, it must be labeled and decorated appropriately:
o Each building MUST have a calculation sheet aligned with it.
o Each person in the group MUST complete two buildings and calculation sheets.
o All buildings must be school appropriate!
You must complete a minimum of 6 buildings (or 8 if you have a group of 4).
BE CREATIVE!!!
Come to class prepared with ALL materials EACH day! The following materials will be provided for
you: tape/glue, scissors, and markers. If you would like ANYTHING ELSE your group must bring it in.
Attendance is CRUCIAL during this project!!! You will not be given any extra time to complete the
project. If you are absent, you must still complete your portion of the city project on your own time
outside of class. Your WORK ETHIC needs to be strong during this project!!! Group members must be
on task and organized.
All calculations sheets must be ACCURATE!!! Make sure you know your formulas and how to use
them! DOUBLE-CHECK your calculations.
Each building MUST be named and labeled on the project.
The groups city name MUST be labeled on the project.
Dont get off task!!! You have a lot of work to do in a very short amount of time.
Calculations Sheet
Building Name: _____________________________ Group Member Name: _______________________
Fill in all that apply to your building. You MUST also draw the image on the back of this paper with all
dimensions labeled on the image.
Length of Base: ________
Height: _______
Radius: _______
Height of Base: ________
Slant height: _______
Apothem: _______
For the following calculations, show the equation you used with just the variables. Then plug in your
values from above and show all work.
How much material was used to construct the building? (total surface area)
Formula Used:
How much paint is used to paint the outside? How much will the paint cost at $12 per gallon? (surface
area to be painted)
Formula Used:
How much roofing material is needed to shingle the roof? How much will the materials cost at $15 per
square foot? (surface area to be roofed)
Formula Used:
How many cubic units need to be heated or cooled? How much will the cost be to heat or cool at $0.35
per cubic foot? (Volume)
Formula Used:
