Dear Karolos Papoulias,

I am a currently a resident of Greece and I have had some major concerns for the past
couple of years involving our economy. As a developing country, Greece highly depends on the
service sector and only has a GDP per capita of $24,505. Our economy was devastated by World
War II and has only just seen increases in GDP throughout the past couple of years. Our
economy faces significant problems which include rapid unemployment rates, tax evasion,
corruption, and low global competitiveness. Although Greece experienced several years of
economic growth, in 2008 we went into recession which impacted our economy greatly. By the
end of 2009, Greeces economy faced the highest budget deficit in the EU. Also as a result of
Greeces economic-crisis, our industrial production went down a total of 8% since 2010. This is
a major crisis because many people have jobs relating to the industrial field and with
production down pay is less and so are hours. Not only are adults who are required to work are
affected but children have seen the negative side of this economy-crisis as well. Disturbing
levels of poverty and deprivation is being noted among children and the youth. If were able to
change simple things about Greece then within a couple of years our economy could improve
severely. Certain ways we, as a nation, would be able to increase the economy include
promoting generic pharmaceuticals which would provide more money for Greece rather than
spending money on more expensive alternatives. Also, by increasing the amount of goods
manufactured it would mean more income for the country as well as providing jobs for people
who are unemployed.
