Prosthetic limb

So far many people have been given a prosthetic limb. A prosthetic limb is an
artificial limb, which is attached where the limb has been amputated due to a
trauma or disease. Prosthetic limbs are used for better mobility and for balance.
They also give people the freedom of functioning without depending on others.
Prosthetic limbs must be light and flexible and must be easy to move about in.
The model needs to fit the patients weight and body as well. But now
biomechanical engineers are planning to make a prosthetic limb the moves by
the brain.
Biomechanical engineers plan to make
prosthetic limbs move by the control
of the brain. In the limbs there is a
type of nerve called the reinnervated
nerves. This nerve sends signals from
the muscle (in the limb) and then
sends to the brain to tell the limb to
move. When the limb has gone the reinnervated nerve is still there. With the
nerve reattached this only means that the patient has to think what to do.
Biomechanical engineers have realized that if you reattach the nerve to a
prosthetic limb then this will be much easier to move about..
When the prosthetic limb has been attached through surgery the nerves have to
practice being able to work again. Zac Vawter lost is leg in a motorcycle accident.
He then got a prosthetic leg that he would control by his brain. When he had been
given the leg, the nerves had to practice working again. Zac had to practice using
his new leg over and over again with a physiotherapist. He now lives a happy and
easy life with his family.
