Aerospace Structures Assignment

A single aisle twin engine short range passenger airliner uses a typical wing
construction of spars, stringers and a stressed skin. The rear spar runs from the
wing box toward the tip using a traditional I-section; a proposal has been made to
use a u-section to reduce weight. The spar loading and dimensions are given in the
figures below.
Your tasks are to:
1. Analyse the vertical deflection of the i-beam wing spar and its Maximum
rotation due to engine thrust, you may assume that 30% of the torque due to
thrust is accounted for in the spar. 40%

2. Specify a mechanically equivalent spar with a u-section, estimate the weight
difference between the two and make a recommendation. 40%
The remaining 20% of marks are available for extra-mile work, i.e. comparison to a
numerical simulation or experimental analysis, optimising the model based on
material specification to improve stiffness:weight.
