The Scottsboro Boys Incident (Too Kill a Mockingbird)

Magazine/Newspaper Project


Project Goals:
A. To introduce students to the Scottsboro Boys Incident, Trial
B. To learn about some of the individuals responsible for the incident
C. To research racism in the 1930s
D. To show the parallel between the Scottsboro Boys Trial and Too Kill a
Mockingbird
E. To practice research skills
F. To promote critical thinking and collaboration

Directions:
A. Research each topic below and write one headline article for each.
B. Create a newspaper/ Magazine to present the information. You work by
yourself, in pairs, or groups of three.
C. You must include 6 articles, 6 pictures with captions, 1 advertisement from
the 1930s, and one extra (weather, horoscope, classified, entertainment,
crossword puzzle, etc.)
D. Project must be typed, in columns, have a title (name, date, location, price)
include headlines, authored by- lines for stories, and should accurately
present each topic below.
E. Do not copy and paste information from the Internet. Gather and rewrite
information into your own words.
F. Project must be on paper the size of at least 8 1/2 by 11 inch. Organize
logically and staple in upper left hand corner.
G. Remember this is a newspaper/magazine from the 1930s so it should
accurately portray work from this time.

B. Report the happenings during the trial
C. A biography of Haywood Patterson during incident, trial.
D. A biography of Victoria Price and Ruby Bates during incident, trial.
E. A biography of Judge Hortons role during trial
F. Write an article on any other aspect of life, or interesting person during the
1930s
