Lesson Plan
World History
Pre-World War II Era
Grade 10

Goal: Standard 2
Students will use a variety of intellectual skills to demonstrate their
understanding of major ideas, eras, themes, developments, and turning points in
world history and examine the broad sweep of history from a variety of
perspectives.

Objectives: Students will
Be able to locate England, France, Spain, Germany, the
United States, Japan, Russia, and Italy on the world map and
be able to compare and contrast this map with maps from
before World War II.
Understand what happened after World War I as well as the
current state of Europe before World War II.
Be able to recall important people from the Pre-World War II
period such as Winston Churchill, Dwight D. Eisenhower,
Adolf Hitler, Benito Mussolini, Franklin Delano Roosevelt,
and Joseph Stalin.
Construct a timeline for the period starting at the end of World
War I all the way to the start of World War II.
Define and analyze the causes of World War II.
Recall the start of World War II.
Materials: World map, map of Europe, overhead projector, computer, lecture
outline with notes, and the handout with the key.

Vocabulary: Nationalism, Nazism, Militarism, Alliances, Inflation, Socialism,
Unification, Dictatorship, Allies, Axis, Fascism, Appeasement, and Anti-Semitism.

Warm up:
Snowball Fight: Have students take the vocabulary form the list above and have
them write the words on sheets of paper. Crumble up the paper into balls and give
the students 2 minutes to throw the balls at each other. Once time is up, every
student must pick up one snowball each and try their best at defining the word.
