Past perfect examples

"Perfect" in a grammatical sense means completed.


So:
I am eating (Present progressive - going on now)
I have eaten (Present perfect - completed as of now)
I had eaten (Past perfect - completed in the past)
The last doesn't mae an! sense "nless the reader or listener nows the context that the
writer or speaer is referring to - i.e. #ad eaten $efore what other thing%
So& in context:
"'id getting the $ad news spoil !o"r dinner%"
"(o I had alread! eaten )$efore I got the $ad news*."
In this example& getting $ad news and eating were $oth completed $efore the disc"ssion
too place& $"t the eating was finished $efore the $ad news was received.
#e had dr"n all the wine when I came home. (There's none left...)
#e dran all the wine when I came home. (+pon m! ret"rning home& he started drining)
#e was drining all the wine when I came home. (#e was in the middle of something...)
