Department of Psychiatry Residency

Required/Recommended Textbook Listing

We all look forward to the excitement of the upcoming academic year. To make the seminars maximally productive and
interactive, it is expected that residents will have reviewed the information for each lecture in advance. Therefore in
advance of the presentations, for example, on Affective Disorders and their treatment, you will be expected to review
the sections of your chosen textbook, the DSM-IV-TR, APA treatment Guidelines, think about the issues, and come with
informed questions on the topics. We believe this expectation will better prepare you for your responsibilities for life-
long, self-directed learning and study. If specific faculty have specific or required additional readings, these will be
distributed in advance of the presentation, whenever possible.

The following guide will hopefully be helpful in your approach to developing a reference library for your training.

Internet Sources

Most of your offices, both call rooms and the RTO have a complete electronic library for your use. Several of the
books described above are available on line through the UCSD Biomedical Library (see psychiatryonline) and/or
the VA Electronic Library (see Ovid.com). The UCSD electronic library has over 100 Psychiatry journals, over 100
medical journals and over 100 medical texts for your reading pleasure. In addition, PUBMED searches are
available. To help residents learn to navigate these resources, a seminar on using the Internet for literature
searches and readings will be provided in the PGY-2 didactic series. In addition, Nancy Stimson, a biomedical
librarian, is available for group or individual tutorials. She can be reached at 858-534-6321. Additional

Libraries
In addition to the two large biomedical libraries on campus and at the Medical Center, the VAMC has a small but
useful biomedical library on the 4
th
floor and the Outpatient Clinic maintains the Ilona Karka Memorial Library on the
4
th
floor. In addition, each call room is stocked with medical, psychiatric and other texts. Each call room provides a
computer with access to the Internet, biomedical library and electronic texts and articles. Finally, the RTO maintains a
collection of textbooks, audiotapes, videotapes, review material and other educational material for residents to
check-out at any time.
