Whiskey Ring

The Whiskey Ring was an 1874 scandal in which a group of Whiskey distillers attempted to defraud, or
illegally obtain money, from the federal government thru taxes. A secret investigation of the scandal
resulted in 238 indictments and 110 convictions. Rumors also spread that the illegally obtained tax
money was to be used in President Grants reelection; this highlighted the corruption under Grants
presidency.

May 10, 1875- whiskey ring exposed
This event was significant because it was one of the first times a politically powerful ring of corruption
that was made known to the public. It also put Grants presidency in a negative light, since there was so
much deception that happened under his term.
