This study examines the methodology of al-Hafiz Abu al-fida Ismail b.
Kathir in dealing with the verses related to legal rulings (Ayat al Ahkam) as
found in his Tafsir al-Qur ‘an al-‘Azim. It is done by exploring the ways /bn
Kathir utilized the sciences of Qur’an, sciences of Hadith and Usul al-Figh
in extracting the legal injunctions of the Qur'an.
The study follows an analytical and inductive method. It explains and
clarifies the standpoint of /bn Kathir in Fighi issues derived from the
Quranic verses (Ayat). It then, compares the method of /bn Kathir in those
Ayat with those of other scholars.
The most important findings of the study are as follows:
First, contrary to what is known about A/-Hafiz Ibn Kathir as being a
Mufassir and Muhaddith, he is also a well versed Fagih. This is evidant in
his objective and sound opinions in deriving legal injunctions from the
Quranic Ayat.
Second, A/-Hafiz ibn Kathir followed in his Tafsir, in general, and in the
legal Ayar in particular, the method of Tafsir bi al-Ma 'thur (exegesis based
upon Quran and Sunnah). This method distinguishes his Tafsir from the rest
of Tafasir and confirms the position of most authentic Tafsir bi al-Ma 'thur,
especially while dealing with Israiliyyat (stories from Jewish sources) and
revealing its hidden dangers.
