launching Summer 2014
Step inside the vast Victorian Linthouse building, listen
to the whirring of the machine pits and discover why
Scotlands inuence on the maritime history of the world
has been so enormous.
Explore this Cathedral of
Engineering and see some of
Scotlands oldest and most
important historic vessels
including Lady Guilford, one of the
oldest surviving wooden boats;
Carola, a steam yacht built in 1898;
and the RNLI lifeboat TGB.

Build and test your own model
boat or learn to manoeuvre a
remote-controlled boat in our
indoor boating pond.
Discover all about the bold
inventors, craftsmen and sailors
who designed, built and sailed these
vessels across the world.
Climb aboard the MV Kyles, the
oldest Clydebuilt vessel aoat, and tour the Captains
cabin, crew quarters and the engine room.
Get hands on with a range of interactive exhibits.
See the countrys largest collection of shipbuilding tools
and machinery. Spanning 150 years of shipbuilding in
Scotland, it includes some amazing inventions which
changed shipbuilding forever.
Peek inside the shipyard workers tenement at and get a
feel for life during the heyday of Scottish shipbuilding.
The Denny Ship Model
Experiment Tank, Dumbarton
Visit the worlds rst commercial ship model experiment tank
at the Scottish Maritime Museum in Dumbarton.
Built in 1882, the vast Denny Tank extends the length of a
football pitch and was used for testing ship designs.
Watch the ship model carriage running and learn about
the world famous Victorian ship designer William Denny.
Listen to our new oral history posts telling the story of
life at Dennys shipyard.
Step into the Tracer/
Analyst Room to see the
equipment they used, how
ships were designed and
how the test results were
used and stored.
Try your hand at smoothing and carving a real wax hull model.
Test different hull designs in our mini experiment tank with
wave making machine.
Experience the working environment of the traditional model
makers, clay moulders and
carpenters in 1882.
