While student teaching, I have learned a lot about student behavior and the different ways students

respond to different teachers and the multiple ways you talk to them. The teacher I worked with didnt
do any kind of behavior system and I struggled with it at first because I am so use to using a behavior
chart whether it be a light chart or a clip chart. I went with the way she wanted it run in her classroom
and at first, I thought always giving the students verbal positive reinforcement was working, but I
struggled to ignore the students who acted out all the time. When I finally took over, I started using the
consequences of a note home or a call home about the behavior, but I didnt feel it worked because the
student didnt seem to care that I talked with their parent. The parent would check with me every day to
see how their behavior was though. I started talking with the one particular student who always had a
behavior problem every day and we had a nice talk about if he was struggling with any of the work we
were doing to always raise their hand and ask for help. This really seemed to change the students
behavior because it showed the student how much I cared about their work and learning. By the time I
switched over to special education, the student was working hard, trying their best and not having so
many behavioral problems. There were several things that influenced a students behavior, some
students behavior would come about because they were working on a task that was challenging and
instead of trying or asking for help, they would act out. Some students would have behaviors because
they saw others in the class either act the right way and wanted to be like their peers or they saw them
act out and wanted to test it out on the teacher. While in the special education class, the teacher didnt
enforce the behavior system and the students were always acting up and calling out. I changed it right
when I took over because the behaviors were making it so the students couldnt learn. I implemented a
point chart for the students and they responded well to it. The student with the most points for the
week got to sit on the couch and do their work. At the end of the day, students who were focused and
working hard got stickers at the end of my time being in the room.
