Problem 1
For the following elementary potential flows, plot the streamlines using the velocity vectors and
the streamplot function. On the same plots, plot lines of constant velocity potential using the
contour function (Reference Andersons Fundamentals 3.9-3.14).

Uniform Flow:
x, y Velocity Components:

Velocity Potential:

Source Flow:
Radial and Tangential Velocity Components:

Vortex Flow:

Where source strength =5, vortex strength =5, freestream velocity V

=1

Observe the effects of combining different elementary flows by superimposing the velocity
vectors and plotting the streamline results:
Uniform + Source Flow
Source at (-1, 0) + Vortex at (1, 0)
Uniform + Source at (-1, 0) + Vortex at (1, 0)
Comment on the characteristics of each compound flow and on the effect of varying the
strengths of the source and vortex.

Problem 2
Given the wake velocity distribution of an airfoil, calculate the drag using the momentum
equation (See Andersons Fundamentals 2.6). Fit wake velocity data points with a polynomial
function before integration for greater accuracy. Assume air is incompressible with density =
1.2 kg/m^2.

Problem 3
Treating air as an incompressible fluid, use mass continuity (Eqn 2.43) and Bernoullis principle
(Eqn 3.14) to compute the velocity and pressure distribution throughout the given duct geometry.
Flow exits the duct at a velocity of V
0
= 5 m/s. Assume atmospheric pressure at the inlet.

Plot static pressure contours within the duct geometry. Report the flow velocity in the test
section (point of smallest cross-sectional area).

Plot static (P), dynamic (q), and total pressure (P
T
) within the duct as a function of x and
comment on how these properties vary and how they are related.
