To apply:
Email: heather.hunt@usc.edu
Subject line: Undergrad Research
Include 1-page resume (including classes taken)
Application deadline: Jan. 18, 2010.
General Description:
Nanoscale devices can interact with their environment when their surfaces are modified
in such a way that molecules can be adsorbed, adhered, or bound. In this project, the
undergraduate researcher will synthesize antibodies that are tethered to polymer chains
of various lengths, and attach these materials to inorganic substrates. The researcher
will analyze the reaction using fluorescence microscopy, and develop software tools to
quantify the extent of attachment based on fluorescence intensity measurements.
During the course of this project, the researcher will become familiar with inorganic
chemistry techniques, bioconjugation techniques, and polymer synthesis. Additionally,
the researcher will gain a significant amount of experience in analytical techniques,
including microscopy, NMR, spectrophotometry, ellipsometry, and SEM.
Position Length: minimum of 12 months, including full-time paid work during the
summer. Part of this project can be performed for directed research credit.
