0 The Great Gatsby is an American classic that tells the
story of Jay Gatsby who is a wealthy businessman. His neighbor is Nick Carraway, who happens to be the cousin of his former love, Daisy Buchanan. Daisy is married to Tom Buchanan a prominent, adulterous man. Throughout the book, Gatsby holds on to the hope that Daisy will return to him. However, this leads to his demise amongst other things. It is also revealed that Gatsbys entire empire was a sham. Historical Context 0 The story takes place in West and East Egg, villages in Long Island that are separated from each other by a bay. The year was 1922 and the era was called the Jazz Age. There was also post-war economic growth. Daisy Buchanan Portrayed by Carey Mulligan Meet Tom Buchanan 0 In the beginning, Tom treats his wife, Daisy very harshly and cheats on her with Myrtle Wilson.
0 When everything starts slipping out of his hands at the end of the book, he reassures Daisy of his love for her and that she can never love Gatsby more than him.
0 Tom advances the plot of the story by lying to George Wilson about who killed his wife and making him believe that Gatsby was her secret lover. This led to Gatsbys death.
