Plot Summary

0 The Great Gatsby is an American classic that tells the


story of Jay Gatsby who is a wealthy businessman. His
neighbor is Nick Carraway, who happens to be the
cousin of his former love, Daisy Buchanan. Daisy is
married to Tom Buchanan a prominent, adulterous
man. Throughout the book, Gatsby holds on to the
hope that Daisy will return to him. However, this leads
to his demise amongst other things. It is also revealed
that Gatsbys entire empire was a sham.
Historical Context
0 The story takes place in West and East Egg, villages in
Long Island that are separated from each other by a
bay. The year was 1922 and the era was called the
Jazz Age. There was also post-war economic growth.
The characters attended lavish parties and partook of
alcoholic drinks such as gin and had promiscuous
lifestyles.

0 In the beginning, Gatsby only interacts with Nick Carraway
through dinner parties and luncheons.

0 However, over time Nick becomes one of his most trusted
confidants and tries to help him win back Daisy. Nick was
also Gatsbys only close friend present at his funeral.

0 Gatsby developed the theme of the story by continuing to
hold on to the hope of being reunited with Daisy and by
seeking wealth he strived to attain the American Dream.

0 In the beginning of the story, Nick is friendly towards Tom
Buchanan because of their previous relationship. He even
goes as far as tagging along with him to meet his mistress.

0 At the end of the book Nick dislikes Tom because of his
carelessness, love of money, and how he makes others
clean up his own mistakes.

0 Nick advances the plot in the story because without him
Gatsby wouldnt have rekindled his flame with Daisy.

0 Daisy in the beginning of the story realizes that she
has always loved Gatsby. She makes this known
through her expressions and speech.

0 At the close of the book, Daisy recognizes that she
cant erase her history with Tom and that with him
she has status and wealth. Daisy then cut off any ties
she had with Gatsby. She didnt even acknowledge his
death.

0 Daisy develops the theme of betrayal in the story, by
leaving Gatsby for her cheating husband despite his
allegiance to her.

0 She also advances the plot because of the conflict of
whether or not she will choose Gatsby or Tom.

Meet Tom Buchanan
0 In the beginning, Tom treats his wife, Daisy very harshly
and cheats on her with Myrtle Wilson.

0 When everything starts slipping out of his hands at the end
of the book, he reassures Daisy of his love for her and that
she can never love Gatsby more than him.

0 Tom advances the plot of the story by lying to George
Wilson about who killed his wife and making him believe
that Gatsby was her secret lover. This led to Gatsbys death.

0 Toms relationship with Gatsby in the beginning of
story was casual. However, once Gatsby mentioned his
previous affairs with Daisy, Tom grew suspicious.

0 At the end of the book Tom had developed a hatred for
Gatsby and revealed the truth about his wealth. He
was also delighted to hear about his death.
