9 Types of modifications and accommodations

1. Quantity
Adapt the number of items that the learner is expected to learn or complete. Allow the completion of
tasks in smaller chunks until the student has met the objective. Adapt the amount of information
provided at one time

2. Time
Adapt the time allotted and allowed for learning, tasks completion and testing. Allow a longer period of
time for the student to learn the concepts/objectives. Individualize the pace of learning to meet the
needs of the students.

3. Input
Adapt the way instruction is delivered to the students. Use audio and visual aids, semantic mapping,
guided imagery, concrete examples, hands on activities, pre-reading activities. Place students in
cooperative learning groups.

4. Output
Adapt how the learner can respond to the instruction. Allow the student to provide verbal responses vs.
written answers. Provide hands on tasks for evaluating learning.

5. Level of support
Increase the amount of personal assistance with a specific learner. Provide instruction in a manner that
can become independently supported as necessary. Assign peer buddies, teaching assistants, or tutors.
Employ cooperative learning methods. Perform a self-check of materials.

6. Difficulty
Adapt the skill level, problem type, or the rules on how the students may approach the assignment.
Simplify directions, provide cues, and adapt assignments to the computer, for the use of a calculator
etc to assist in the assignment completion.

7. Participation (Designed for a student with a severe disability)
Adapt the assignment to the extent to which a learner is actively involved with the task. Adapt the level
of participation expected during a task (feedback loop).

8. Alternate Goal (Designed for a student with a severe disability)
Adapt the goals, objectives and outcome expectations for the assignment while using the same
materials as those supplied to the rest of the class.

9. Substitute Curriculum (Designed for a student with a severe disability)
Provide different instruction and materials to meet a learners individual goal.
