Role of Bridges
Important part of a nations
infrastructure.
Facilitates trade and transportation
which are crucial to a nations economy.
Connects isolated parts to the mainland
extending the development to all parts of
the country. Ex:- Confederations Bridge

Current Bridge Monitoring
Scenario
Bridge Inspection Visual Inspection of
the bridge at regular time intervals. It
suffers from the following drawbacks:-
1. Lack of Objectivity
2. Obstruction of Traffic Flow
3. Discrete Monitoring
Better Alternative
Use of sensors for continuous
monitoring of the vibration
characteristics of the bridge.
Correlation of bridge damage with the
change in vibration characteristics.
Advantages
Safety- guards against sudden,
catastrophic failures.
Economic Helps optimize the use of
individual components of a bridge by
continuous and individualistic
monitoring. Ex:- Bearings

Current Progress
Correlation is being established between
the various damage scenarios and the
corresponding change in vibration
characteristics.
Use of Abaqus (FEA software) to model
the bridge.
Calibrated against field data.
Damage scenarios are to be simulated
in the model to establish the desired
correlation.
Conclusion
Achievement of the socio-economic
benefits of safety and economy which
are the principle aims of any engineering
project
