AfterWorldWarII,numberofnewcountriesbecameindependentinAsia,includingIndia.Manyoft

iancountrieshavetheirowngames.Theideawasdiscussedduring1948OlympicGamesheldatLon
don.
Finally,on13thFebruary,1949,anewbodyAsianAthleticFederation(AAF)wasformedinNewDelhi
,alongsidethenameAsianGamesFederation,withNewDelhiannouncedasthefirsthostcityofthe
AsianGames.ItwasanefforttoinitiateapeaceprocessbetweenAsiannations,makingsportsthebi
ndingfactor.However,atthattimetherewereonly11participatingcountries(Afghanistan,Burma,I
ndia,Indonesia,Iran,Japan,Nepal,Philippines,Singapore,SriLankaandThailand),intheevent,com
petinginameresixsportscategories(athletics,aquatics,basketball,cycling,footballandweightliftin
g.).ThefirstAsiadwasscheduledfor1950butactuallyheldinMarch1951.ThesecondGameswere
heldin1954,andsincethantheseareheldeveryfourthyear.Japanwerethewinnersoftheveryfirst
AsianGames.
However,afterthreesuccessfulAsianGames,certaincontroversiescroppedinandthefederationstar
tedhavingdisagreementsoveravarietyofissues,includingtheparticipationoftheRepublicofChina
andIsrael.Thus,certainnationsbackedofffromhostingtheGames.However,thesegameshavebe
enheldeveryfouryears.
Till1978,thegameswereheldunderthebannerofAsianGamesFederation.LateronOlympiccom
mitteesofmembernationsreconstitutedthe
AGF,astheOlympicCouncilofAsia.Sincethe1982GameshavebeenorganizedbytheOlympicCou
ncilofAsia(OCA).Thus,nowafterover63yearswhenthesegamessawthelightoftheday,thiseve
nthasbecomeworldssecondlargestsportsevent,surpassedingrandeuronlybytheOlympics.
All45membersaffiliatedtotheOlympicCouncilofAsia(OCA)areeligibletotakepartintheGames.I
nhistory,46NationalOlympicCommittees(NOCs)havesentcompetitorstotheGames.However,Isra
elhasbeenexcludedfromtheGamessince1976,thereasoncitedasbeingduetosecurityreasons.
Interestingly,onlysevencountries,namelyIndia,Indonesia,Japan,thePhilippines,SriLanka,Singapor
eandThailandhavecompetedinalleditionsofAsiad.
AspertheAsianGameshistory,athletesfromJapanandChinahavedominatedtheproceedingsinthe
eventsoftheGames,baggingnumerousmedalsandemergingasthestandoutperformers.Bangkoki

Indias Mars Mission On dot in First Attempt and Cheapest
in the World

On 24
th
September, 2014, India created history as it became the first country to successfully
send a spacecraft into Mars orbit on its very first attempt. The mission was executed by Indian
Space Research Organisation(popularly known as ISRO) and was declared successful after the
first signal of Mars Orbiter Mission (MoM) success was confirmed from NASAs ground station
in Canberra, Australia.
MOM is Indias first interplanetary mission. It comprised of a 1350-kilogram unmanned robotic
satellite that has also been unofficially called Mangalyaan or Marscraft. from Earth.

Now ISRO has become the fourth space agency in the world to reach Mars. The other three
agencies are:-

a) European Space Agency (ESA) of the European consortium
b) National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) of the U.S.
c) Roscosmos of Russia
India also became the first Asian country to successfully execute a Mars mission

HowTheMissionWasExecuted:
The mission started its journey to the red planet Mars on 5th November 2013 through a
launch from the First Launch Pad at Satish Dhawan Space Centre SHAR, Sriharikota, in
Andhra Pradesh. The launch was done through ISROs reliable Polar Satellite Launch
Vehicle (PSLV) C25 rocket.
The Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle, PSLV-C25, injected the Spacecraft into an
Elliptical Parking Orbit with a perigee of 250 km and an apogee of 23,550
km.
Further, six orbit raising manoeuvers gradually raised the apogee of the
spacecraft to 1,92,874 km, using the 440 N Liquid Engine on board.

The last manoeuver, termed as Trans Mars Injection (TMI), moved the
spacecraft in the Mars Transfer Trajectory (MTT). Spacecraft crosses Earths
Sphere of Influence (SOI) and enters heliocentric elliptic cruise phase.
Trans Mars Injection (TMI) was carried out on Dec 01, 2013 which

moved the spacecraft in the Mars Transfer Trajectory (MTT). With TMI
the Earth orbiting phase of the spacecraft ended started its course to
encounter Mars after a journey of about 10 months around the Sun

Finally, MOM reached Mars orbit on 24 September 2014. The orbiters propulsion
system, called the Liquid Apogee Motor (LAM), erupted into life. . With this the orbit
entered into most crucial manoeuvre called Mars Orbit Insertion (MOI). This meant for
lowering the spacecraft into the Martian orbit, with a peri-apsis of 423 km and an apo-
apsis of 80,000 km. The manoeuvre was successful.

Worlds Cheapest-ever mission to Mars

The most important feature of the Indian Mars Mission was the low cost which which the whole
successful mission was executed. This satellite and the entire Mars Orbiter mission have been
made ready at a record cost of Rs. 450 crore or nearly $67 million dollars. It was assembled by
the ISRO in about merely15 months. This is undoubtedly the lowest-cost inter-planetary
mission ever to be undertaken in the world. The darling of Martian dreamers American rover
Curiosity which landed on Mars only two days earlier costed almost 10 times of the cost of
Indian mission. Mr Modi has compared this with a Hollywood movie Gravity, which cost even
more than Indias mission to Mars.

Objectives of the Mission :

One of the main objectives of the first Indian mission to Mars is to develop the
technologies required for design, planning, management and operations of an
interplanetary mission.

Following are the major objectives of the mission:

A. Technological Objectives:
Design and realisation of a Mars orbiter with a capability to survive and
perform Earth bound manoeuvres, cruise phase of 300 days, Mars orbit
insertion / capture, and on-orbit phase around Mars.
Deep space communication, navigation, mission planning and management.
Incorporate autonomous features to handle contingency situations.
B. Scientific Objectives:

PayloadscarriedbyMarsOrbiterMission(MoM)
Mars Orbiter Mission carries five scientific payloads to observe Martian
surface, atmosphere and exosphere extending up to 80,000 km for a detailed
understanding of the evolution of that planet, especially the related geologic
and the possible biogenic processes on that interesting planet. These
payloads consist of a camera, two spectrometers, a radiometer and a
photometer. Together, they have a weight of about 15 kg.

Deuterium/Hydrogen

Lyman Alpha Photometer (LAP)
Lyman Alpha Photometer (LAP) is an absorption cell photometer. It measures
the relative abundance of deuterium and hydrogen from lyman-alpha
emission in the Martian upper atmosphere (typically Exosphere and
exobase). Measurement of D/H (Deuterium to Hydrogen abundance Ratio)
allows us to understand especially the loss process of water from the planet.

Methane Sensor for Mars (MSM)

MSM is designed to measure Methane (CH4) in the Martian atmosphere with
PPB accuracy and map its sources. Data is acquired only over illuminated
scene as the sensor measures reflected solar radiation. Methane
concentration in the Martian atmosphere undergoes spatial and temporal
variations.

Mars Exospheric Neutral Composition Analyser (MENCA)
MENCA is a quadruple mass spectrometer capable of analyzing the neutral
composition in the range of 1 to 300 amu with unit mass resolution. The
heritage of this payload is from Chandras Altitudinal Composition
Explorer (CHACE) payload. MENCA is a quadrupole mass spectrometer based
scientific payload, capable of measuring relative abundances of neutral
constituents in the mass range of 1 to 300 amu, with a unit mass resolution.

Mars Color Camera (MCC)

This tri-color Mars color camera gives images & information about the surface
features and composition of Martian surface. They are useful to monitor the
dynamic events and weather of Mars. MCC will also be used for probing the
two satellites of Mars-Phobos & Deimos. It also provides the context
information for other science payloads.

Thermal Infrared Imaging Spectrometer (TIS)
TIS measure the thermal emission and can be operated during both day and
night. Temperature and emissivity are the two basic physical parameters
estimated from thermal emission measurement. Many minerals and soil
types have characteristic spectra in TIR region. TIS can map surface
composition and mineralogy of Mars.

Health Minister Harsh Vardhan today
launched India's first National Anti-
Tuberculosis Drug Resistance Survey in New
Delhi. The survey will be conducted on 5,214
patients across the country. It will provide
information on the prevalence of anti-
tuberculosis drug resistance among new and
patients already undergoing treatment. The
number of multi-drug resistant TB cases in
the country had increased by five times
between 2011 and 2013.
After agreement with Australian PM, India
will now be in a position to secure uranium
from Australia to meet its energy
requirements, with the two countries signing
a bilateral civil nuclear agreement. Australia
would provide supply of uranium, production
of radio isotopes, nuclear safety and other
areas of cooperation to India.

RBI has decided to do away with the requirement of

To safeguard markets from systems risks, Securities and
Exchange Board of India (SEBI) has put in place a new
layer of safety net in the form of core settlement guarantee
fund to mitigate risks from possible default in institutional
trades. The new system will enhance the robustness of the
present risk management system of the clearing
corporations to enable them to deal with defaults of the
clearing members much more effectively. This new core
fund will be created within the existing Settlement
Guarantee Fund, against which no exposure is given and
which is readily and unconditionally available to meet
settlement obligations of clearing corporation in case of

SBI launches multi-
currency
international debit
card
State Bank of India (SBI) in tie-up with MasterCard
recently launched its first multi-currency international
debit card which allows customers to use a single card to
pay in multiple currencies. To begin with, the prepaid debit
card will enable customers to load four currencies US
dollar, Euro, Great Britain Pound and Singapore Dollar.
RBI sets 70 years as

RBI has decided to fix the maximum age for Managing
Directors and Chief Executive Officers in private sector
banks at 70. As per Companies Act, 2013 "no company
shall appoint or continue the employment of any person as
Managing Director, Whole Time Director or Manager who
is below the age of 21 years or has attained the age of 70
years''. RBI has extended the same rules to private banks
too.

ICICI Bank, has announced its Cardless Cash Withdrawal
service which will allows its customers to transfer money
from their account to anyone in India with a mobile
number. Then the recipient will be allowed to withdraw
money round the clock without using a debit card from
over 10,000 ATMs of ICICI Bank across the country.
