Class and status

A group of people in society that possess the same economic status, often
determined by occupation, education, income, manners etc.
Upper class- The upper class are wealthiest class, most of their wealth is inherited
through families and generations, this meaning that the upper class families are the
oldest families with many of them titled aristocrats.
Middle Class- The middle class is the majority of the population. These include
industrialists, professionals, business men and women, shop owners etc.
Lower/Working Class- The lower/working class are people working in agriculture,
mines or factories. Their jobs are always labouring or involve being physically and
their working hours are all day (6 to 8) with minimal pay.
The Underclass- The underclass are citizens outside of employment structure.
This includes the homeless, poor, unemployed, Old age pensioners, students
and people living on welfare etc.
An example of the upper class in TV Drama would be Matthew Crawley. He
is a Lawyer and has inherited his wealth from his father, Doctor Reginald
Crawley. This links with the upper class as his wealth is inherited and as his
father was the Earls of Grantham, he became the Heir of the title.
An example of the middle class in TV Drama would be Chandler
Bing from Friends. A character that is the audiences favourite, Chandler
works as an IT procurement manager. In America, for this job Chandler
would earn an average $95,000, this fits in as a middle class civilian and
also being married his yearly wage is helped by his wife Monica.
An example of the lower/working class in TV Drama would be Charles
Carson. Being a butler, he spends most of his time taking orders
from the upper class civilians and spends most of his time
downstairs in the kitchen with other lower/working class civilians.
