The Way You Used To

Matted fur grazes my cheek

Beady, black eyes buried beneath your beige coat
They reach for mine
The familiarity of your shape
Brings me a sense of ease
It oozes through my being
But I only reach for you at night
When I am reminded of the unbearable emptiness
Which I share with my bed
In the day light
Youve fallen to the floor
Hidden in the shadows
Of dirty socks, lint, and gum wrappers
Or you hide beneath my sea of blankets
An arm reaches out from the soft, pink folds
Sometimes I see you breathing
And I wish that you would speak to me
The way you used to
