*t my church( middle and high school students are gi#en the chance to o$erate the sound or
#ideo during our Sunday morning church ser#ices+ The soundboard is $retty straight!o'ard: ,t merely
in#ol#es turning the $astor-s micro$hone on 'hen he-s talking and o!! 'hen he-s not+ .ideo( on the
other hand( is a bit more com$licated+ Song lyrics( Bible #erses( creeds( and the like are all $laced into
a slidesho'+ The $erson o$erating the slidesho' needs to !ollo' along 'ith the ser#ice and ad#ance to
the next slide 'hen a$$ro$riate+ T'o $ro)ectors dis$lay the current slide at the !ront o! the church+ ,-#e
'orked on the church-s multimedia since my !reshman year( and in that time ,-#e become /uite skilled
at it+
,n the early days( , 'as only scheduled to run the sound once or t'ice a month+ *s my skills
e#ol#ed and , started 'orking 'ith the $ro)ectors instead( , ended u$ being scheduled a lot more o!ten+
0hene#er a Sunday that , 'as su$$osed to 'ork on rolled around( , did e#erything in my $o'er to
sho' u$ on time+ , didn-t allo' anything( be it home'ork or a cold( to deter me+ The last thing , 'anted
'as to miss a day 'hen , might be needed+ ,t $aid o!! in the end( as there came a day 'hen , 'as the
only one that sho'ed u$+ The church administrator( 'ho su$er#ised the multimedia team and ste$$ed
in i! there 'as nobody else a#ailable( 'as on #acation+ 1ather than $anicking and letting the $ressure
get the better o! me( , managed to run the entire ser#ice by mysel!+ *bout a year later( , 'as $laced on
the schedule less o!ten so as to gi#e younger members o! the team more $ractice+ E#en so( , !re/uently
check to make sure there are enough $eo$le on hand+ ,! there aren-t( , al'ays #olunteer to ste$ in+ *s o!
late( ,-#e been o!!ering to su$er#ise the team mysel!+ The church administrator al'ays acce$ts( as she
gets the chance to sit 'ith her !amily during the ser#ice+
Com$leting a large $rogramming $ro)ect re/uires team'ork+ 2aturally( i! someone doesn-t take
res$onsibility !or their $art o! the $ro)ect( a large chunk is going to end u$ missing+ ,-m ca$able o!
stri#ing to accom$lish things 'ithout ha#ing to be urged by somebody else( so any teams , 'ork 'ith
'on-t ha#e to 'orry about me not $ulling my 'eight+ *dditionally( ,-m ca$able o! going abo#e and
beyond 'ith anything , 'ork on+ This 'ill be an incredibly use!ul skill in $rogramming( as there-s
al'ays something that can be added to make a $rogram more stable or user !riendly+ 0hile it-s $ossible
to com$lete a $rogram by doing the bare minimum( small details can make a large im$act+ ,! , don-t
ha#e anything else to do( , may tinker and im$ro#e some o! those small details+
* big $art o! becoming an adult is acce$ting res$onsibility !or a lot o! things+ 0hether it-s
taking care o! another $erson or a $et( making sure , eat and slee$ enough( or kee$ing my home in a
res$ectable state( someone 'on-t be around to encourage me+ ,-ll ha#e to reali3e that ,-m obligated to do
these things( get o!! my la3y butt( and do them+ The ability to exceed ex$ectations is going to hel$ me
in this de$artment as 'ell+ There are a ton o! things that should be done e#en though they don-t
necessarily ha#e to+ 0hile it-s not a necessity to sort out my sock dra'er( it-ll sa#e me !rom ha#ing to
!rantically search !or t'o matching socks later do'n the line+
