SUGGESTED APPROACH

The general arrangement of this volume is outlined below. Section 8.1.4 which follows g
an out l i ne of good general l aborat ory pract i ces, wi t h references t o Vol ume 1 and t o o
parts of this volume. It is suggested that the technician should study these before proceec _
with laboratory tests. Attention should also be given to safety aspects, outlined in Section 8.).
EQUIPMENT
Section 8. 2 consists of a review of those items of equipment and tools which are common
to several of the tests described in this volume. It is divided into sections relating to measuring
instruments; apparatus for preparation of specimens; load frames; constant pressure systems;
and general laboratory equipment. Special items required exclusively for a test are listed in
the appropriate chapter. An outline description is included of electronic accessories, which
can be substit uted for conventional met hods of observation in many t ests.
The proper use and care of measuri ng i nst rument s are descri bed i n Sect i on 8. 3, whi ch
should be studied carefully before using the equipment. Calibration is covered in Section 8.4.
