STEPS TO CONSTRUCTING A ROD PUPPET

copyright 1998 Nick Barone Puppets

Head Rod rests against

inside of head to support it

The jaw is attached to the

Jaw Rod and not to the head.
Fabric can be added later
to cover the gap between
the two parts.

If you decide that the neck

is this long...that means
the Body Rod should be
mounted this far from the
bottom of the head.

Leave the Body Rod long for

now... it can be cut when
body size is determined.
Leave
yourself
plenty
of string.

Body rests on
and is attached
to the Body Rod.

3
String
goes to
trigger.

These Rods should still be

left long at this point.

If your puppet will be standing

behind the playboard of your
stage, you should make the Rods
no longer than shown to the left.
playboard
If your puppet is to stand
on top of the play board
with its legs in full view,
or if it jumps or flies,
the Rods need to be
considerably longer.

Once you have decided the over-all length of the Head Rod and Body
Rod, you can finish off the Rod Control with a Hand Hold and Mouth Trigger.
Please keep in mind that I have simplified these procedures.
It would be very difficult for me to completely explain every
detail of Rod Puppet Construction, Ill save that for my book.
Best of luck, Nick Barone
