1.0 Lesson Plan Details: Rhode Island, Day, 4th grade

Expected Duration: 45- 60 minutes


Concepts: a look at Rhode Islands geography and history
Vocabulary: Roger Williams, Samuel Slater, Slater Mill
Skills: web-based research, map reading skills

1.1 Integration of Learning Outcomes/ Objectives


1. Students will be able to use web-based research to learn about Rhode
Islands geography and history.
2. Students will be able to share their findings of Rhode Islands geography
and history.
1.2 Standards
NCSS.1.8.A: Enable learners to identify, describe, and examine both current and
historical examples of the interaction and interdependence of science, technology,
and society in a variety of cultural settings.
8.3.4.C Explain how continuity and change in U.S. history have influenced personal
development and identity.

1.3 Anticipatory Set


1. Begin the lesson by reviewing the basic details we learned about (insert state)
yesterday (location in the Northeast, capital, etc.) by having the students take out
their Northeast Unit packet.
2. Have students flip to the page with the outline of Rhode Island on it and go over
the location of the state as well as the capital and climate.
3. Explain what a web-based Scavenger Hunt is.
4. Model how to utilize PowerPoint to locate the answers to the questions in the
Scavenger Hunt.
1.4 Procedures
1. The teacher will direct students to their unit packet and briefly review the
previous days lesson and introduce todays state.

2. The teacher will show the students the location of Rhode Island in the Northeast
and tell them the state capital and climate.
3. The teacher will explain that we will be researching some important aspects of
Rhode Island using a web-based Scavenger Hunt. (Objective 1)
4. The teacher will hand out the laptops and answer sheets to each students.
5. The teacher will tell the class how long they have to complete the assignment.
6. Students will work individually to find the answers to their scavenger hunt.
(Objective 1)
7. The teacher will tell the class that if they finish their Scavenger Hunt before their
classmates, they should hand in the laptop and begin working on something in their
writing folder quietly in their desk.
8. The teacher will walk around and make sure the students are working on the
Scavenger Hunt and not side- tracked by another website.
9. The teacher will collect all laptops, as the students are finished with them.
10. The teacher will call on students to give the answers they found and collect them
once all ten are shared. (Objective 2)

Students may use dictionaries to translate.


Students can work in partners with native language speaker.
Allow students a break, if frustration begins.

2. Learning Disability:

Students who struggle with reading can use headphones and have
questions read aloud to them.
Provide student in a space with little distractions.
Provide written and oral directions.

1.6 Closure
1. Teacher will collect students answer sheets.
2. Teacher will ask students questions about Rhode Island as a review.
3. Teacher will inform students of tomorrows lesson on the next
Northeastern state

1.7 Formative/ Summative Assessment of Students


Formative: Teacher will be able to walk around the room and observe
students progress. Teacher can ask students different kinds of questions to
test the depth of knowledge they have been learning.
Summative: Teachers will collect the answer sheet from the students.
Students progress will be based on accuracy and the facts they discovered
on the scavenger hunt.

2.1 Reflection on Planning


Janet: I love creating scavenger hunts. I lack creativity, but when I make a
scavenger hunt I feel as if my creativity comes alive. I enjoy coming up with
fun questions that get the students thinking about the topic at hand. Social
Studies can be so dry because it is so factual. When learning with a
scavenger hunt students are having safe, web-based fun.
