Mrs. Smolonsky Photography 1: Period 1 4 November 2014 Photo Write 11/7/14: Self-Critique
My favorite photograph of mine (shown above) is a landscape photograph at
Del Mar displaying a family walking on the beach at sunset. The main focus of the piece is a group of people walking on a summer evening framed by the cliffs on one side and the ocean on the other. The natural leading lines created by the water and the cliffs pull you eyes down the photograph to the group create a large sense of depth as well as a focal point of emphasis due to the placement of the subjects. Moreover, the distance of the subjects emphasizes the pull and depth of the picture. Also, the reds and oranges of the sunset contrast with the blue sky and waves while reflecting of the wet sand to create value contrast. The balance of the picture is symmetrical although the higher cliffs to the left contrast the water to the right of the people. A wide variety of textures are also found in the piece from the wetness of the water, to the wet and smooth sand, to the roughness of the rocks. As for photograph composition, the focal length emphasizes the subject and the frame is filled with the sunset, hills, and ocean while also the background isnt taking attention of the subject. The picture has a light, joyful mood created by the soft colors and subject matter. I created this photo by facing perpendicular the beach and capturing the group I saw using the natural lines of the waves to emphasize them. The strongest aspects of this photograph are its elements of design and composition as well as the time of the picture during sunset, when it wasnt too dark or too bright, to get the right amount of light in the photograph.
