2.1 Engine Operation Outline

CCD Sensor Board

Comprises a 3-line color CCD (Independent R, G, B)

and its control/drive circuits.

This chapter describes the functions and operating principles of GT-S80/S50 engine.

LED Board

Uses a white LED as the light source.

GT-S80/S50 is a document scanner that feeds documents through the fixed carriages.
The scanner mounts two carriage units for the frontside and backside of the document
to provide the simultaneous double-sided scanning.

Mirror/Lens Mechanism

The beams applied to the document to be scanned are

reflected on the surfaces and pass through the mirror/
lens mechanism in the carriage units to correct the beam
axis, then reach the CCD Sensor. The extraction of light
components R, G, B, is done by the color CCD sensors
themselves, not by the traditional light source switching
between R, G and B.

The engine mainly consists of two components: the carriage units and document
feeding mechanism.

2.1.1 Carriage Unit

and the mirror/lens mechanism. (See Figure 2-1, Figure 2-2)

GT-S80/S50 provides continuous scanning for various sizes of documents using the
mechanism with the fixed carriages that feeds documents to the scanning section one by
one from the document tray.
This section describes the document feeding mechanism and its operation.

Parts Name

Function
Detects whether the document tray is open or closed. When
the document tray is closed, the scanner turns to powersaving mode. When the tray is open, the scanner recovers
from the power-saving mode.

NOTE: Some sizes of the documents require a carrier sheet.

2.2.1 Configuration
Paper path sensor

The document feeding mechanism of the GT-S80/S50 consists of the motors, rollers,
and three kinds of sensors as shown in Table2-1.

The documents set on the document tray are fed one by one separated with the separate
pad and the paper feed roller. It is fed with the PF roller in synchronization with the
timing of scanning by the carriage.
After the end of the document is detected by the paper detect sensor, the document is
fed a few more steps and the scanning is regarded as complete. Then the EJ roller ejects
the document to the paper eject tray.

In the case of double-sided scanning, both the frontside and backside of the document
is scanned simultaneously during document feeding.

2.2.3 Detecting Double Feeding (GT-S80 only)

GT-S80 mounts ultra sonic sensors to detect double feeding during continuous
scanning. There are two ultra sonic sensors on both the transmitter and the receiver
across the paper feeding path. Ultrasonic emitted from the transmitter goes through the
document(s) and reaches the receiver. The receiver monitors the changes, and if the
receiver detects the double feeding, the scanner indicates the double feeding error.
The ON/OFF setting of double feeding detection can be carried out by TWAIN driver
(EPSON scan) and the detection sensitivity is also selectable according to the
document thickness.

This chapter explains the remedies for errors detected by the self-diagnostic function, and the troubleshooting based on observed symptoms to troubleshoot the problems on the
scanner quickly and efficiently.

3.1.1 Self-Diagnostic Function

This scanner has a self-diagnostic function that automatically checks the operating status of major components, and indicates the error status with the LCD and/or LED on the
control panel. The following are the error statuses and their remedies.

4.2 Disassembly Procedure

This section illustrates how to remove the main components of this product. Unless otherwise specified, the reassembly procedure is the reverse of the disassembly procedure. For
additional assembly illustrations, refer to the exploded diagrams in the Appendix.
The following flowchart shows the disassembly procedure step-by-step. When disassembling each unit, refer to the corresponding section and page number where the procedure is
described.

CHECK
POINT

Since a prototype was used to illustrate these disassembly and

reassembly procedures, the appearance of some parts may
differ from those on actual product. The procedures
themselves, however, are accurate for the retail model.
The parts surrounded with dotted line are not the shortest ways
of removing them, but you need to remove the parts/units if
they exist on the way to the target part/unit.

CHECK
POINT

Disassembling procedures for GT-S80 and GT-S50 are basically the same, but the colored
blocks contain the parts not mounted on GT-S50 or have differences on GT-S50.
Since a prototype was used to illustrate these disassembly and reassembly procedures, the
appearance of some parts may differ from those on actual product. The procedures
themselves, however, are accurate for the retail model.
The parts surrounded with dotted line are not the shortest ways of removing them, but you
need to remove the parts/units if they exist on the way to the target part/unit.
When replacing the Ultra Sonic Sensor, it is recommended to replace both of the
transmitter on the Top unit and the receiver on the Bottom Cover. This is because it is
impossible to know or detect which Ultra Sonic Sensor (Transmitter or Receiver) is faulty.

Method Outline

When the Main Board needs to be replaced, use this to

copy the data stored in the EEPROM on the old Main
Board; such as scanner operation information, to the new
board.

Reads out the EEPROM data using Adjustment Program

from the Main Board before removing it. When copying
the data to the EEPROM, save the data as a file and read it
again from the file after replacing the boards, then write
the data to the EEPROM on the new board.

The unit of the lamp-on time is one minute.

The following are the specification of the scan count
The scan is counted by one scanning.
The scan is counted as one even if it is cancelled halfway.
The scan aborted due to an error is not counted.
The number indicates only the times of executed scanning, not the times of paper
pass.
Pick up Roller Count and Separation Pad Count are reset when replacing the
consumables; therefore, they are not the same as the accumulative numbers.
Indicates the number of paper passes including both scanning and feeding.

Revision B

6.1 Overview
This chapter explains the maintenance work necessary to keep this product in the best
condition and to prevent trouble in advance.

Document reading
surfaces (glass parts)

6.1.1 Cleaning
Clean the outside of the product with a neutral detergent, and clean its inside with a
vacuum cleaner. Special care must be taken when cleaning the document reading
surfaces (glass parts) since it affects the quality of image scanning.

CAUTION

Never use organic solvents, such as thinner and benzene,

because they may deteriorate or degrade the plastic and rubber
parts.
When using compressed air products; such as air duster, for
cleaning during repair and maintenance, the use of such
products containing flammable gas is prohibited.

Exterior
After wetting a clean cloth with water and then completely squeezing water out of
it, wipe the exterior with that close. If the exterior is extremely dirty, wipe it with a
cloth moistened with a small amount of detergent.
Document reading surfaces (glass parts)
Clean them with a clean, dry cloth. When the document reading surfaces are
especially dirty or have foreign material on their surface, wipe it with a cloth
moistened with a small amount of neutral detergent. If the document reading
surfaces have traces of wiping after cleaning, completely wipe them with a dry,
clean cloth again.
Document transfer path (Paper Feed Roller, PF Roller, EJ Roller, Idle Roller,
Separation Pad)
Wipe the rollers and separation pad in the document transfer path with a tightly
squeezed cloth. If the path is still wet after the cleaning, completely wipe it with a
dry, clean cloth again.
Make sure that the document transfer path is completely dry before using the
scanner.
