Fall 2014, V. R. Murthy, Assignment 1, August 26, 2014
Prerequisite Undergraduate Material Due: September 9, 2014 ============================================================================== 1. Draw axial force ( ), bending moment ( ) and shear force ( ) diagrams for the beam problems, shown in SET 1, which are loaded in the Express the loadings as functions of . Write down the boundary conditions for the problems and also the known conditions at the supports if they are not at the boundary. Write down the ( ) ( ) The third problem in this set is a statically equations for ( ) indeterminate problem and use two methods to solve this problem: i. Superposition method, ii. Displacement method. Compute the maximum values of these internal forces and their locations. Compute the maximum axial stress, , due to the axial force, and max. due to the bending moment, and shear stress, max , due to the shear force. And their locations. Note that the plane of loading is a principal plane. 2. Compute the deflection/displacement/deformation curves of the beam problems shown in SET 2. 3. Consider a thin-walled closed cylindrical pressure vessel and compute the hoop stress ( ) and the longitudinal stress ( ) with the following data. Radius = 1000mm; Thickness = 10 mm; Internal pressure = 0.8 MPa. What is the change in the diameter given E = 200 GPa and Poissons Ratio = 0.25. 4. Consider the stepped shaft problem shown in SET 3 and draw torque diagram, torsional deflection diagram(angle of twist), and compute the maximum shear stress ( ) in the shaft.
