Lesson Plan: Find Ladybugs

Objective:
Incorporate the importance of the environment and respect for insects into
the learning process
Finding ladybugs so their whereabouts can be documented to prevent
more native species from becoming so rare
Materials:
Digital Camera
Smartphone with camera
Computer with an internet connection
Insect field guide
Procedure:
1. Pass out the insect field guide the night before and have the students look
it over
2. At the beginning of class talk to the students about rare insects and
insects on the endangered species list
3. Take the students outside to find and collect ladybugs
4. Photograph the ladybugs using a phone or digital camera
5. Have the children upload their images on the classroom computer to the
Lost Ladybug project website
6. Debrief after asking the students to talk about what they learned and how
they feel about helping document ladybugs in an effort to save them
