Lesson Plan: Trip to the Potter Park Zoo

Objective:
Make use of a local resource in a fun and interactive way
Allow students to learn outside of the classroom to allow for better
engagement, new perspectives, and knowledge of real world issues
Take a tour of the Potter Park Zoo to learn about the various animals and
their importance to the environment
Materials:
Chaperones
A school bus
Paper and pens for students to take notes
Appropriate walking clothes
Procedure:
Meet at the school and travel to the Potter Park Zoo by bus
Have a tour guide lead the students on a tour around the zoo, talking
about the various animals
A question and answer session will follow where students can ask the
guide questions
A debrief session will follow after that where the students can talk about
their favorite part, what they learned, etc
