Session 1 Journal

Discussion:
In this phase, the mentee and I took time to understand the needs through
conversation. She shared where she learned her values and principles from and how her
family was important toward this development. The expectation and confidentiality was
discussed. We talked about goal settings and for her to start thinking about what kind of
goals she wanted to work toward.. We discussed how we would go about choosing goals
and achieving them. We also set the dates and times for our meetings. I also reassured her
that everything we discuss is confidential. I followed the accountability Assurance Table
5.5 was helpful to follow and discuss the ground rules, confidentiality, boundaries setting
and hot buttons.

Discussion:

We discussed and communicated what goals the mentee wanted to work toward. We
talked about possible strategies toward goals. We dialogued about her three goals and
what would be helpful to work toward those goals and why she picked those goals. Her
and I were able to come up with some ideas to use toward accomplishing her goals. I was
careful to create a safe place to talk. I tried to establish a foundation for growth. I was
intentional about listening carefully. According to George, McLean, and Craig (2009),
Active listening is one of the most important abilities of empowering leaders, because
people sense such individuals are genuinely
