Statement of KLA Integration

Key Learning Area (KLA) integration is an interesting and beneficial way to explore unit of work as it
saves on time and allows for a well-rounded learning experience. This unit on The Science of
Magnetism demonstrates KLA integration in lessons five and six by incorporating Human Society and
its Environment (HSIE), Mathematics and Drama.
In lessons two and five, children are encouraged to consider how magnets are used in daily life and
consequently how magnets change the way we live while considering their effects on the
environment (SSS2.7).
Mathematics is embedded in both lessons five and six, where children make and use a compass to
locate N, S, E, W (MA2-1WM), walking and plotting their desired route by drawing a map, then
trading with peers to interpret a new set of directions (MA2-17MG). This science experiment
becomes meaningful through use of the compass the children create and assists in applying other
important real-life skills, ultimately allowing more time for Science learning. Mathematics is again
explored in lesson six while gathering and comparing data (MA2-18SP) during the experiment
around temperature and magnet strength. This integration encourages real use of a table format
and demonstrates the effectiveness of the table in helping one evaluate data effectively.
Educators have a responsibility to cater to different learning styles such as those described as in
Gardners Multiple Intelligences Theory, so it is vital to highlight the importance of communicating
and exploring content in different ways to ensure every child learns. Drama is used to engage
artistically inclined children to consolidate what they have learned in a creative and fun way.
DRAS2.3 allows children to explore creating a drama that communicates meaning while working as a
team to show how characters interact with one another, and structuring the performance in a
logical, sequential way.
This unit effectively and realistically integrates other KLAs so students can partake in the experiences
provided in a hands-on way while exploring the content from a variety of angles.
