GLOSARY

INPUT (NOUN), software:


1. The data that is put into a computer for processing: enter input via a keyboard.
2. The act of putting data into a computer: prepare information for input
INPUT (VERB): To put data into a computer for processing: input figures into the spreadsheet.
INPUT DEVICE (NOUN): a piece of equipment, such as a mouse or keyboard that is used for
inputting data into a computer.
INPUT/ OUTPUT (ADJECTIVE): connected with the part of a computer system that is used to pass
data to and from the central processing unit.
OUTPUT (NOUN):
1. (software) The results of a processing operation performed by a computer. The output is
usually displayed on screen or printed on paper.
2. (hardware) En electrical signal that is passed out of a computer system: The output is
between 8 and 25 volts
OUTPUT (VERB): To send the results of a processing operation to a screen or a printer: key the
changes in the text and output it to the laser printer
RECORD (NOUN): A part of a data file that holds related data about one item.
RECORD (VERB): To store data of information in permanent form on disk or magnetic tape: backup
the computer records onto floppy disk.
DATA (NOUN): number and text, etc that can be organized in a certain way to allow storage and
processing by a computer: feed data into the computer.
PROCESSING (NOUN): The word that a program does on data in order to produce an output.
FEED (verb): to put something else, especially paper into a printer or data into a computer: the
printer automatically feeds in stationery; feed the raw data into the statics program.
