The battle of generations

Many people believe that each new generation born is in effect an invasion of civilization by
little barbarians, who must be civilized before it is too late. Todays children are considered
rebellious, reckless and irresponsible. The gap generation between parents and youngsters
is wider than ever, and the elderly think that planet Earth will suffer more and more from
this generations ignorance. However, it must be remembered that students always learn
from masters until they surpass them.
Each generation doubtless feels called upon to reform the world. This one knows that it will
not reform it, but its task is perhaps even greater. It consists in preventing the world from
destroying itself. That is why nearly nine out of ten teenagers are interested in protecting
wildlife and the environment. Our parents and grandparents have lived in a time when
progress was all about industrializing and technology advancement, no matter the
environmental costs.
Furthermore, each generation imagines itself to be more intelligent than the one that went
before it, and wiser than the one that comes after it. Despite claims that the biggest
discoveries were made decades ago, it is a fact that todays young adult excel in
revolutionizing medicine, science, and computer engineering. Moreover, they try to do it so
that it is cost-effective and available to everyone.
What past generations forget is that our own one will be working much more than they do
now because we have to pay enough bills in order for the government to pay the pensions
of the future elderly. At this moment, birth rate suffers a significant decrease. For example,
in 2012 the average global birth rate was 19.15 births per 1,000 of a population, compared
to 20.09 per 1,000 of a population in 2007.
All in all, the odds are in favour of the next generation. There is a mysterious cycle in human
events. To some generations much is given. Of other generations much is expected. But it
seems that this generation will eventually live up to its expectations.
