America was one of three nations that


independently developed the fundamental
principles of space travel and rocketry the
others being Russia and Germany.

6. In October 1957, the Soviet space program


took an early lead, and in many ways
signalled the true beginning to the space race
when they successfully launched the first
artificial satellite.

set aside initial plans to load the craft up with
a small atomic bomb, which would explode
upon impact with the moon.

satellite launched by the United States when
it was sent into orbit on January 31, 1958.

launched, carrying the dogs Strelka and
Belka.They became the first living beings to
survive a trip into space.

woman in space.

Venus 3 is launched. It becomes the first man made


object to impact Venus on March 1, 1966.
Luna 9 becomes the first spacecraft to soft-land on the
Moon.
Venera collects data about the atmosphere of Venus.
