1. A steam power plant operating in an ideal Rankine cycle has a high

pressure of 2.5 Mpa and a low pressure of 15 kPa. The turbine exhaust
state should have a quality of at least 95% and the turbine power
generated should be 7.5 MW. Find the necessary boiler exit temperature
and the total mass flow rate. (25 points)
2. A refrigerator with R-12 as the working fluid requires 1.5 Kw of power
for a refrigeration rate of 4 kJ/s. a) What is the coefficient of performance
(COP) ? b) How much heat is rejected in the condenser? c) If heat
rejection is at 40 C, what is the lowest temperature the system can
possibly maintain? (15 points)
3. To approximate an actual spark-ignition engine consider an air-standard
Otto cycle that has a heat addition of 1800 kJ/kg of air, a compression
ratio of 7, and a pressure and temperature at the beginning of the
compression process of 90 kPa, 10 C. Determine the maximum pressure
and temperature and the thermal efficiency of the cycle. ( Air is an
ideal gas, R=0.287 kJ/kg.K, Cv=0.717 kJ/kg.K, Cp=1.004 kJ/kg.K, =1.4)
(20 points)
4. A rigid container with volume 200 L is divided into two equal volumes by
a partition. Both contain nitrogen, one side is at 2 MPa, 200 C, and the
other at 200 kPa, 100C. The partition ruptures and the nitrogen comes to
a uniform state at 70C. Assume the temperature of the surroundings is 20
C, determine the work done and the net entropy change for the
process. (Assume the nitrogen behaves as an ideal gas with R=0.2965
kJ/kg.K, Cv=0.7448 kJ/kg.K, Cp=1.0416 kJ/kg.K) (25 points)
5. Sixty kilograms per hour of water runs through a heat exchanger, entering
as saturated liquid at 200 kPa and leaving as saturated vapor. The heat is
supplied by a Carnot heat pump operating from a low temperature
reservoir at 16 C. Find the rate of work into the heat pump. (15 points)
