Addition and

Subtraction
within the number 20
Miss Pallotta

Hello, My name is Miss. Pallotta I am your childs first grade

teacher!

I wanted to tell you a little bit about what we have been doing
in Math class.

In Math we have been focusing on adding and subtracting

numbers within the number 20.

Examples such as: 5 + 7 = 12

20 4 = 16

Common Core Standard: CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.1.OA.A.1

Use addition and subtraction within 20 to solve word problems

involving situations of adding to, taking from, putting together,
taking apart, and comparing, with unknowns in all positions.

Today during our math lesson we continued practicing adding and

subtracting fall themed items!

We had five stations that the students worked through in groups. (They
had 15 minutes in each station)
1.

In the first station they practiced adding and subtracting real leaves, that they
collected previously in the school yard.

2.

I brought in real pumpkins and the students drew items on them (such as parts
of a face, circles, or fun shapes) and then they added and subtracted the items
by adding them on or taking them off.

3.

At another station I had students do a worksheet that had them gluing pumpkin
seeds on the worksheet and create their own equations.

4.

Station Four: They had to do a fall themed packet of adding and subtracting
worksheets.

5.

Station Five: They used the computer to play a math game on a web site called
IXL.

How family members can help their student

practice at home:

One of our stations today was done on the computer on an

online gaming site for learning called IXL.
The students really enjoyed playing and practicing their math on
this site in class! And this site would be great practice for your
students at home!
I have provided you with the full link for the site so it can be
easily found!

There are also a lot of fun games on there to help your student
learn in different areas, feel free to play any of the games that
are in the first grade level or even try some harder ones for a
challenge if you like!
