1. (25 points) An Italian wine producer has proposed aging Champagne-style sparkling
wines in an undersea storage facility, which replicates the cool storage conditions of
traditional cellar aging. An added benefit is that the pressure under the surface of the
sea can counteract the pressure built up in the sparkling wine bottles due to carbon
dioxide (which is the source of Champagne bubbles).
The typical pressure developed within sparkling wine bottles is 6 atmospheres absolute
pressure, or 6.08 x 105 Pa. Assuming that the sea water is at 283K, and that density is
constant, with a specific gravity of 1.025, determine the depth at which the pressure of
the sea water is equal to the pressure inside the bottle of sparkling wine.
3. (25 points) A long rod of radius R rotates at constant angular speed in a large pool of
water, as shown below. The motion of the rod produces a velocity field in the
surrounding water in which v = v(r), and vr = vz = 0. Use the Navier-Stokes equations to
derive an equation for v(r). Hint: far away from the surface of the rotating rod, at
r=, v=0.
4. (25 points) At maximum pumping pressure, the flow rate of water (T=293K) through a
100 m section of 3 inch diameter cast iron pipe is 0.04 m3/s. Estimate how much the
flow rate could be increased by replacing the 3 inch cast iron pipe with 3 inch drawn
tubing.
